How many days do you need?+
Ten days suit a deliberately limited southern route. Two weeks allow more walking time and flexibility for weather. For Fiordland, the West Coast and Abel Tasman in one loop, I would start with around three weeks.
Should I start in Christchurch or Queenstown?+
Christchurch suits Tekapo and Aoraki at the start; Queenstown suits a trip focused on the southern lakes and Fiordland. Compare flights, vehicle return and the final driving stage together.
Should I combine Milford Sound and Abel Tasman?+
Yes on a longer loop. With ten to fourteen days, I would usually choose one region rather than reduce both to brief visits.
Is the South Island expensive?+
Price the vehicle, rooms, food and activities separately. A one-way rental or camper can add costs; fewer hotel changes alone do not guarantee a cheaper trip.
