Coastal walking with time for the beach
Abel Tasman lets you combine a walk with a beach or swimming break. For a first visit, one well-planned section is more rewarding than trying to tick off as many bays as possible by boat and on foot.
Budget bands are rough whole-trip costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, including food and running costs. Add a water taxi or kayaking trip according to the actual option you choose.
I would settle the start, finish and return journey before booking accommodation. A Nelson stay may suit the wider route, but it adds an approach drive on your park day.

Planning to reach the last boat with minutes to spare
Allow for beach and meal breaks as well as walking, and confirm the exact collection beach.

Do I need to walk the entire Coast Track?+
No. One section with a coordinated water taxi, or an out-and-back walk from Marahau, is enough for a day.
Where should I stay?+
Marahau suits a start on foot, Kaiteriteri a boat outing, and Motueka several days exploring the area. Choose around the actual meeting point rather than the town name alone.
What needs booking?+
Confirm the water taxi in advance. Coast Track huts and campsites also require reservations; coordinate tides and transfers before making those bookings.

Choose the kind of day first: a coastal section with a water taxi, a shorter return walk from Marahau, or a guided kayak trip. Avoid fitting all three into your arrival day. Use the DOC overview to coordinate tracks, access points and tides.
How it fits the route
Abel Tasman lies at the northern end of the South Island. On a trip involving Queenstown and Milford Sound, it is a separate stage rather than a minor extra stop. I would allow at least two nights nearby, leaving a full park day between arrival and departure.
Typical trade-offs
A boat saves part of the return walk but commits you to a place and time. Do not choose the longest section merely because it seems to fit between departures. A generous beach break belongs in the day too.
Check with DOC and your operator whether the chosen section includes tidal crossings. A route through Awaroa needs different planning from a short southern walk. Do not assume every beach you can see is also your collection point.
