Editorial introduction
Choose trip length and endpoint first
Wilderness is a useful first base near George, while Plettenberg Bay gives Robberg its own day. Knysna adds lagoon time; Storms River serves the Tsitsikamma coast. Before booking rooms, decide whether to return to George or continue towards Gqeberha. Two nights for Addo and an inland stop at Oudtshoorn are deliberate extensions.
Region snapshot

Our short Garden Route plans start in George. Five days cover Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay with two nights in each. Reaching Storms River and adding a dedicated Addo safari day needs a longer itinerary and a departure point that suits it. Cape Town is outside those short coastal stages.
Alex-style practical take
For a week, start with the seven-day overnight plan. Give Robberg and Storms River Mouth different days. If fewer accommodation changes matter more, visit Knysna from a neighbouring base and keep the spare night there.
Where to start
Use the driving guide to compare George, Cape Town and Gqeberha as rental locations. Then use the budget guide to count nights, rental days and park admission separately. For caves or the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn replaces a coastal block; for Addo, reserve two nights, either extra or already included in the longer plan.

South Africa Garden Route FAQ
How many days do you need for the Garden Route?+
Five days form a short version from and back to George. Seven to ten allow a longer coastal route; our ten-day plan includes two Addo nights. Count the Cape Town approach and any return drive separately.
Where should you stay?+
Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are coastal bases. Storms River suits a Tsitsikamma visit. Allow two nights around Addo for a full park day.
Should you add Addo?+
Yes, if you want wildlife and have enough time. On a short route, Addo can make the coastal trip driving-heavy.
Is the Garden Route good with kids?+
Yes, if driving blocks stay short, stays are practical and beaches, lagoons, forests and parks are not squeezed into too few days.
