What the budget bands cover
These rough editorial bands are per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car. They cover accommodation, vehicle share, food and running costs. Flights, park admission and expensive booked activities are additional.
The figures are not current quotes. Compare local prices in ZAR first, then convert into your planning currency. Season, accommodation standard and one-way charges can change the result substantially.

I would calculate shared fixed costs first, then choose paid excursions that fit. A low daily hire rate says little about the cost of the entire journey.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Equating rental days with nights
Seven travel days may mean six nights but seven car days. Actual pickup and return times determine the charge.
Hiding Addo in the daily allowance
Park entry per person and day plus guided activities need separate lines. Check nationality, age and tariff validity dates.
Counting the deposit as a final expense
A deposit ties up card capacity. Distinguish it from paid rental, excess and non-refundable fees.
Travel planning answers
Garden Route budget questions
Are the figures per person?+
Yes, for two adults sharing a room and car. Solo travellers cannot divide those fixed costs with a second person.
Is Addo included?+
Additional park admission and booked safaris are separate, as are international and domestic flights.
How should I compare a one-way rental and a loop?+
Compare total amounts for the same dates. Returning the vehicle may avoid a one-way charge but needs fuel, time and possibly extra nights.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Before booking the vehicle and stays, so coastal days, one-way rental and additional safari costs fit into one calculation.
Skip if
If the main services are already paid, focus on outstanding expenses instead of estimating the entire budget again.
With kids
Price the room you actually need and any child seats. Use each park’s age categories; the two-adult example is not a family quote.

What the daily allowance means
The daily bands are rough per-person planning allowances for two adults sharing a room and vehicle. Check real quotes for your dates. Count a room once per night and a vehicle once per rental day before dividing the costs.
Calculate seven days and six nights
A hypothetical calculation, not a quote, for seven days and six nights: a car at EUR 40 daily costs EUR 280; a room at EUR 90 nightly costs EUR 540; food for two at EUR 50 daily costs EUR 350; fuel and parking are assumed at EUR 90. Total: EUR 1,260, or EUR 630 per person and EUR 90 per person per travel day. Flights, one-way fees, extra protection you choose, park admission and booked excursions still need to be added.
Where shortening the trip saves money
One fewer night does not automatically save much if it creates long detours. Compare the whole route. Visiting Knysna and Plett from one base can save a move but creates extra driving. For Addo, put admission and any guided activity on separate budget lines.
Shared expenses and park admission
Record shared expenses once, including currency and who paid. Keep personal purchases separate. A rental deposit uses available card funds but is not initially a final trip expense.
As a dated example, SANParks lists an Addo daily conservation fee of ZAR 492 per international visitor aged 12 or over, valid through 31 October 2026. Two adults therefore add ZAR 984 per park day. Children aged 2–11 pay ZAR 246. For later dates or other categories, use the official rates; accommodation and guided activities are separate costs.
