Orientation

Choose the vehicle alongside the route

South Africa drives on the left. If that is unfamiliar, keep the first drive short and learn the controls while parked.

Compare the complete rental, including return station, protection, luggage capacity and deposit. An unsealed-road detour additionally depends on road conditions and rental terms.

Alex Travels
Alex’s take

With limited time, I would compare pickup in George and a one-way return in Gqeberha. Including Cape Town means giving the approach its own place in the itinerary.

  3. 3Plan driving days with breaks and arrival in daylight.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Using the shortest app approach to Addo

SANParks advises against the R335 through Motherwell. Check its recommended approach for the actual entrance.

Treating an SUV as permission for any road

Swartberg and other unsealed diversions require suitable rental terms and current road conditions. The vehicle label is not permission.

Planning a long park loop on flight day

Car return, airport time and slow park roads need separate allowances. Finish the main safari day before departure day.

Travel planning answers

Garden Route driving questions

Which side of the road is used?+

The left. Keep the first leg short if you normally drive on the right.

Which documents do I need?+

Check current requirements for your national licence, any international permit and the rental agreement before departure. A saved copy does not replace the original.

Loop or one-way rental?+

Compare the one-way charge with driving back, fuel and additional nights. George and Gqeberha are different endpoints; choose according to your flights.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Before a self-drive trip between Cape Town, George and Gqeberha: settle vehicle choice, one-way rental, driving on the left and the final approach to each stay.

Skip if

On a fully guided trip, focus on meeting points and luggage; a separate rental car is not automatically needed.

With kids

Confirm child seats and luggage space in advance. Split a long transfer from Cape Town; Robberg plus a late Addo arrival do not make a useful family driving day.

Guide details

After collecting the car

South Africa drives on the left. Choose a short first leg after collecting the vehicle. A long flight, unfamiliar controls and a distant overnight stop make a poor combination for day one.

Compare pickup and return locations

Settle whether pickup and return are in Cape Town, George or Gqeberha. A one-way journey can save driving back but may carry additional fees. Compare the full rental amount with the costs and nights needed for a loop.

Unsealed roads and the final approach

Before taking an unsealed diversion, check conditions, explicit rental permission and the required vehicle type. An SUV label alone does not establish suitability. Ask the accommodation for its recommended final approach and plan to arrive in daylight. Leave room for breaks on long legs instead of filling every remaining hour with another stop.

Documents and the recommended Addo approach

Keep the rental agreement, breakdown number and bookings accessible. Check licence documents before departure with the relevant authorities and supplier. Download navigation maps separately; a saved address and a usable approach are not always the same thing.

SANParks advises against the R335 through Motherwell. Use its recommended approach to the booked entrance rather than accepting the shortest navigation route without checking it.
