Editorial introduction

Choose Dublin, Galway and Kerry by the nights available

A week works for Dublin and Galway with selected outings. Ten days can connect Dingle and Killarney, but require choosing between Connemara and Clare from Galway, and between the park and Ring of Kerry from Killarney. The fourteen-day circuit gives Clare its own stay and separates the two Kerry days. Compare these three actual trip shapes before turning every familiar coastal place into a booking.

Start here

  • 7 days / 6 nights: Dublin 2 → Galway 3 → Dublin 1; no Kerry
  • 10 days / 9 nights: Dublin 2 → Galway 2 → Dingle 2 → Killarney 2 → Dublin 1
  • 14 days / 13 nights: Dublin 2 → Galway 3 → Doolin/Lahinch 2 → Dingle 2 → Killarney 3 → Dublin 1
  • Plan Donegal as a dedicated northern trip; Cork/Shannon change the return leg, final night and car drop-off

Roadtrip logistics

  • Keep Dublin car-free, then collect the rental car when the road trip starts
  • Book summer accommodation early in Galway, Dingle, Killarney and near the Cliffs of Moher
  • Treat rain, visibility, narrow roads and short walks as route-planning inputs, not inconveniences
  • Save route days, bookings, offline notes, documents and shared expenses before long rural drives

  • Killarney National Park
  • Connemara National Park

Dublin is in the east, Galway at the gateway to Connemara, the Cliffs south of it in Clare, and Dingle/Killarney farther southwest. This sequence explains the circuit better than a list of every west-coast highlight: each change of base takes part of a day.

Alex’s practical take

For a week, I would stay around Galway and save Kerry for another trip. With ten days, I would include Dingle and accept the choice between Connemara and the Cliffs from Galway. To see both as well as the park and Ring of Kerry, use the fourteen-day version with the necessary nights.

Seven days: Dublin and Galway

Six nights: Dublin 2, Galway 3, Dublin 1. After arrival and a city day, move to Galway on day 3. Days 4 and 5 allow Galway time and selected excursions. Connemara and Clare lie in different directions and need separate days. Day 6 returns to Dublin; day 7 is departure. Leave out Dingle and Killarney.

This week also works without a rental: Dublin Heuston and Galway Ceannt have rail connections. Rural excursions then need specific outward and return services or a suitable tour. The transport comparison explains the choice.

Ten days: Dingle and Killarney with choices

Nine nights: Dublin 2, Galway 2, Dingle 2, Killarney 2, Dublin 1. Change base on days 3, 5, 7 and 9. Full days are Dublin on day 2, Galway/surroundings on day 4, Dingle on day 6 and Killarney on day 8; day 10 is departure.

This creates two real decisions: Connemara or Clare on day 4, and Killarney National Park or Ring of Kerry on day 8. Galway–Dingle is not an additional full Cliffs day. Slea Head belongs on the full Dingle day and returns there for the night.

Fourteen days: Clare and two different Kerry days

Thirteen nights: Dublin 2, Galway 3, Doolin or Lahinch 2, Dingle 2, Killarney 3, Dublin 1. After reaching Galway on day 3, days 4 and 5 allow Connemara, the city or a weather swap. Day 6 moves to Clare with a selected Burren stop, and day 7 is for the Cliffs. Day 8 travels to Dingle; day 9 explores the peninsula. After the transfer on day 10, days 11 and 12 provide the park and Ring of Kerry, or two park days. Return to Dublin on day 13 and fly on day 14.

A return flight from Shannon or Cork can change the ending. Match the last transfer, final night and car return to your actual flight. Donegal is a separate northern focus; this hub’s Horn Head photograph shows that wider Irish region, which none of the three example circuits visits.

Cliffs, lakes and peninsulas need different days

The Cliffs of Moher are a defined visitor stop, not a universally open through-walk. The official coastal-path notice dated 1 August 2026, checked on 7 September, lists the southern route to Liscannor/Hag’s Head as closed; from Doolin only the section to Surfers Path and back is indicated. Read the Cliffs guide’s current access notes before visiting.

In Dingle, a second night separates arrival from the Slea Head drive. In Killarney, a third night separates the national park from the long Ring of Kerry. The family guide recommends longer Galway and Killarney stays instead of an additional Dingle base.

Compare accommodation and budget details

In Dublin, check the journey to the station or later rental desk; in Galway, confirm actual parking; in Dingle, consider the walk into town for dinner. In Killarney, decide between town-adjacent gardens and more distant park access. A town name alone does not answer these accommodation questions.

The budget examples count rooms by night and cars by booked rental duration. Ten travel days may require nine room nights and seven rental days, while food is counted across all ten days. Two adults share room and vehicle costs; a family needs its own occupancy calculation. The budget guide states assumptions and exclusions instead of pretending that one trip price applies to everyone.

Travel planning answers

Ireland road trip FAQ

How many days do you need for an Ireland road trip?+

A week focuses on Dublin and Galway here. Ten days provide one full day each in Dingle and Killarney; fourteen add a dedicated Clare stay and another Killarney day.

Is 7 days enough for Ireland?+

Yes: six nights as Dublin 2, Galway 3, Dublin 1. The two full Galway days allow selected excursions, not an additional Kerry circuit.

What is realistic in 10 days?+

Nine nights as Dublin 2, Galway 2, Dingle 2, Killarney 2, Dublin 1. Choose Connemara or the Cliffs from Galway, and the park or Ring of Kerry from Killarney.

Should you focus on the west coast?+

The west coast has several possible focuses. Galway, Clare and Kerry form this Dublin circuit; Donegal can equally be its own short trip.

Is the Wild Atlantic Way too much for one trip?+

Choose a section for 7 to 14 days. The official Wild Atlantic Way runs from Inishowen/Donegal to Kinsale/Cork and is not the same as this shorter Dublin circuit.

Dublin or Galway as a base?+

Use Dublin for car-free city time and Galway for the city and separate Connemara or Clare outings. Staying in Doolin/Lahinch reduces the return journey after the Cliffs.

Do you need a rental car?+

Dublin–Galway works by rail. Dingle and the Kerry circuit need a suitable rental plan or specifically booked tours and checked onward connections.

Where do Ireland costs add up?+

Count room nights, actual rental days and food separately. The budget guide works through an example for two adults; flights, extra cover and chosen tours still need adding.
