Orientation

Why Galway is the west coast anchor

Galway sits between Connemara outings to the northwest and Clare to the south. Three nights give two full days without changing accommodation.

Spanish Arch and the municipal museum also give a city half-day a specific focus.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

If you are unsure where to add a night, add it in Galway before adding another one-night stop. The west coast is easier when you can swap Connemara and cliffs days.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Using Galway for only one rushed night

The city works best as a base, not just a sleep between long drives.

Locking cliffs and Connemara into fixed weather days

Swap the order if visibility or rain makes one day stronger.

Expecting quiet evenings everywhere

Galway can be lively. Choose lodging carefully if noise matters.

Travel planning answers

Galway travel guide FAQ

How many days do you need in Galway?+

Two nights are useful. Three nights are better if you want both Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher.

Is Galway a good base for the Cliffs of Moher?+

Yes. It is practical by car or organized day tour, but weather still matters.

Is Galway good with kids?+

Yes, especially if you use it for shorter day trips, groceries and slower evenings.

Do you need a car in Galway?+

Not for the center, but a car helps for Connemara and flexible coast days.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Very worth it as the west-coast base for a first Ireland road trip.

Skip if

Skip extra nights if you only want a quick city stop and are not visiting Connemara or the cliffs.

With kids

Use Galway City Museum or Salthill for a short day; Connemara from Letterfrack is a full outing.

Guide details

Galway as west coast base

Two nights give one full outing day; three nights give two. Connemara is northwest, while the Cliffs of Moher are south. Use separate days for those directions. An arrival evening in the Latin Quarter is not another full west-coast day.

What to do in Galway

Combine Spanish Arch with Galway City Museum and a short old-town walk. Admission to the municipal museum is free; check its opening day before relying on it in rain. Salthill promenade makes a different half-day, requiring its own journey or a longer walk. Central lodging helps with car-free evenings; in Salthill, allow for the return from the old town.

The hero is an older harbour image featuring a parking notice. It is not current parking guidance. Ask the lodging which car park is actually available and check signs on site.

Day trips

For Connemara, choose a focus: Clifden and Sky Road, or the national park at Letterfrack. The park lists the Ellis Wood Nature Trail as 0.5 kilometres, but it includes steps and boardwalk; “short” does not mean buggy-accessible. Diamond Hill is a larger hiking decision, not an automatic extra alongside the coastal drive.

A Clare day uses the regular Moher visitor area and at most one other local stop. The Doolin coastal walk currently does not lead through to it. Read the cliffs guide before joining a walk to an admission booking. Weather can change the order, but Connemara is not a guaranteed weatherproof alternative either.

Budget notes

The EUR bands apply per person per travel day for two adults sharing a room and car, food and fuel; tours, admissions and flights are additional. For a city-only day, later car collection may avoid rental costs. Find museum and park information directly from Galway City Council and NPWS.

Save the plan

Use WanderSpend to keep Galway nights, Connemara notes, cliff weather backups, bookings and shared costs together before the west coast starts rearranging your days.

Where to go next

Read the Wild Atlantic Way Guide before adding more coastline, or use the Cliffs of Moher Guide to decide whether the famous stop fits your timing.
