Coast or Sierra: allocate the nights first
A week between San Francisco and Los Angeles can combine the two cities with the Pacific coast. Yosemite needs its own inland block, and Sequoia extends that detour. Choose one Sierra park for a ten-day trip. Fourteen days can accommodate both if you reserve at least two nights around each park visit. Coastal stages require open roads: fire and road closures in September 2026 prevent treating a Big Sur through-drive as a fixed part of the itinerary.

Access checked September 7, 2026: Several Big Sur state parks, including Julia Pfeiffer Burns, are closed until further notice because of the Timber and Plaskett fires. Highway 1 is also affected. The current park notice and Caltrans take precedence over the route ideas below. Do not currently plan a Big Sur through-drive or visits to closed parks; reassess open inland connections and accommodation.
The examples begin in San Francisco and end in Los Angeles. Compare a flight into one city and out of the other with the one-way rental charge before booking. International travel may require additional calendar days.
Start With the Route Shape
The cleanest first California route is San Francisco, the coast and Los Angeles. Add Yosemite when you can protect at least two nights. Add Sequoia when giant trees matter enough to justify another Sierra move.

How many days do you need for a California road trip?+
Seven days can cover San Francisco, the coast and Los Angeles. Ten to fourteen days are better if you add Yosemite, Sequoia or a slower coast pace.
Should you drive north to south?+
North to south is popular on Highway 1 because ocean pullouts are easier, but flight prices, park timing and road access can matter more.
Is Highway 1 always open?+
No. Big Sur can be affected by landslides and repairs, so check Caltrans before committing to a through-drive.
Does Yosemite require reservations in 2026?+
The National Park Service states that Yosemite does not have an entrance reservation requirement for 2026, but lodging, traffic, parking and seasonal roads still need planning.
Should you add both Yosemite and Sequoia?+
Only if you have enough days. Yosemite is the stronger first Sierra park; Sequoia is best as a deliberate giant-tree contrast, not a rushed extra.
Where should you pick up the rental car?+
Most travelers should avoid keeping a car during San Francisco city days and pick it up when leaving the city.
