Ljubljana, two contrasting lakes and the Julian Alps make a strong first Slovenia trip. The Adriatic coast and Soča Valley extend that journey in different directions. Decide which of those extensions fits your available time before booking the overnight stops.
Alex-style practical take
For seven days I would choose two Ljubljana nights, three Bohinj nights and a final Ljubljana night. That provides a full city day and two full nature days. Ten days add three nights in the Soča Valley or Piran. The detailed itinerary assigns arrival, outings and the return journey; the coast is an alternative to the western valley section.
Choose your lakes and mountain days
Bled suits the island church, castle and a selective lakeshore walk. Bohinj works for several days around the shore, Vogel or Savica. Both lakes can be busy in summer. One lake base is sufficient when Bled is planned as a day trip or transfer stop.
Lake Bohinj is already inside Triglav National Park. A park visit does not require climbing a summit. In the Soča Valley, choose Bovec for guided activities or Kobarid for Kozjak, history and restaurants. At least two nights prevent the stay from becoming merely a drive through.
City, cave and coast
Ljubljana connects bridges, market and castle in a walkable city visit. Collecting the rental afterwards can save rental and parking days. For the south, the cave comparison helps choose a visit by paths, duration and interests, especially with children.
Piran, Izola and Koper serve different interests: a headland old town, harbour time or Venetian-influenced urban history. With two nights I would choose Piran and at most one additional town, adding garage costs before comparing accommodation.
Driving and parking notes
The Vršič approach from Bohinj runs through Bled and Kranjska Gora. Check road and mountain conditions before the travel day. Weather, trail status and vehicle access are separate decisions. At car pickup, also establish the required e-vignette before using roads that require it.
Where to start
The budget guide works through a week for two adults. The season guide separates city and lake choices from higher mountain trails. For families, longer lake stays, outings suited to the children's abilities and a clear departure day provide the foundation.
