Choose Postojna for ease and family logistics

Postojna is the simpler half-day. The train covers most of the five-kilometre route, leaving just over one kilometre on foot. The path has no steps, although there is a significant gradient, and strollers are permitted. That combination makes it the safer choice with younger children, limited energy or uncertain weather.

The trade-off is atmosphere. Postojna is popular, highly organised and more expensive. Book a specific entry time, arrive at least 30 minutes early and expect a polished attraction rather than a quiet wilderness experience.

Choose Škocjan for the stronger natural experience

Škocjan wins on scale and drama. The underground river canyon, bridges and enormous chambers feel more elemental than Postojna's formation-focused route. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, at current prices, markedly cheaper.

The visit is more physical: the core tourist trail is around three kilometres with roughly 500 steps. Good shoes matter. If you continue through the collapse dolines after the cave, the full outing can reach 2.5–3 hours and include considerably more walking and steps.

Time, tickets and accessibility

For either cave, reserve about three hours from parking to departure. The guided cave portion is roughly 90 minutes, but timed entry, check-in and walking to the start add friction. In peak season, advance booking is the calmer option.

Postojna is the clear accessibility choice, but it is not completely flat. The official route includes a steep incline and wheelchair users receive separate train-only guidance; advance notice is required. Škocjan's many steps make it unsuitable for travelers who need a step-free visit.

Can you visit both caves in one day?

Yes, but only with a car, compatible guided-tour times and a genuine interest in caves. The visits are different enough to avoid repetition, yet the day becomes schedule-led. Do not combine both with a full afternoon in Piran or an evening flight from Ljubljana.

For most first trips, one cave is the better decision: Škocjan for the most memorable natural experience, Postojna for the easiest all-round travel day.

Which cave is the better rainy-day option?

Postojna is the more weather-proof plan because the experience is tightly contained and the walking route is easier. Škocjan still works in poor weather, but reaching the cave and taking the optional surface route expose you to rain, and wet steps demand more care.

In both caves, outside heat is irrelevant: pack a warm layer for temperatures around 10–12°C.
