Why Ireland can work well with kids
Dublin provides a car-free arrival, Galway combines city time with a selected west-coast outing, and Killarney offers gardens and park visits. These three bases reduce repeated unpacking.
The journey still includes long transfers from Galway to Killarney and back to Dublin. If those do not suit your family, leave Kerry out and divide the nights between Dublin and Galway.
I would start a Killarney day around Killarney House and decide afterwards whether the children still want to visit the lakes. The full Ring of Kerry is an optional driving day, not a required part of a family park visit.

Ten days with nine allocated nights
The circuit starts and finishes in Dublin: Dublin 2 nights, Galway 3, Killarney 3, Dublin 1. It includes three substantial changes of base. If long drives are difficult for your children, Dublin plus Galway is the simpler alternative.
- Days 1–2: Arrive in Dublin, then spend a full day in the city. Choose a manageable museum visit, such as the National Museum – Archaeology, and a park break. Collect the car only when leaving.
- Days 3–5: Drive to Galway for three nights. Divide the two full days between city/museum time and either Connemara or Clare. Swap their order if coastal weather is poor.
- Day 6: Transfer directly to Killarney, with food and movement breaks. Do not add the Cliffs to this day.
- Days 7–8: Two full Killarney days. Use one for the house/gardens and a chosen lake access, and the other for Muckross or another short park outing. A full Ring of Kerry circuit replaces one of these only if everyone enjoys a long driving day.
- Days 9–10: Return to Dublin for the final night, then depart. This keeps the drive from Kerry away from flight day.
Fourteen days: more time in the same places
For 13 nights, allocate Dublin 2, Galway 5, Killarney 5, Dublin 1. Travel to Galway on day 3, Killarney on day 8 and Dublin on day 13; fly on day 14. This leaves four full days each in Galway and Killarney.
From Galway, Connemara and Clare can become separate outings, with two remaining days for the city, rest or weather changes. In Killarney, spread park time, lakes and an optional Kerry drive over four days instead of repacking each morning. Dingle is an appealing alternative but needs its own nights: replace some Galway or Killarney time and recalculate transfers.
Choose short walks carefully
Galway City Museum and Dublin’s National Museum – Archaeology offer free admission; check opening on your intended day and choose displays for your children’s ages and interests. A museum works better as its own small outing than squeezed between two long drives.
In Connemara National Park, Ellis Wood is 0.5 km long but includes stone steps and boardwalks according to NPWS. Short does not automatically mean buggy-friendly. Around Killarney, the house, gardens and demesne provide a town-adjacent starting point; ask about current surfaces and steps before choosing further trails. The stony lakeshore in the header does not establish an accessible path or a swimming spot.
Cliffs and a rainy-day alternative
At the Cliffs, stay on the open visitor path behind designated barriers. Drop the outdoor visit in strong wind or poor visibility. The official coastal-path notice dated 1 August 2026, checked on 7 September, lists the southern route towards Liscannor/Hag’s Head as closed; from Doolin, only the section to Surfers Path and back is indicated. This is not a family through-walk to the visitor centre.
Keep a museum day available in Galway and a shorter town day in Killarney. Shopping, laundry and a meal at the accommodation are real free time in the plan, not more attractions. For a kitchen stay, check equipment and grocery access before the long transfer.
A budget for the whole family
The ranges above are per day for two adults and two children together, sharing one family room or apartment and one car. They are editorial targets for accommodation, food, base rental and fuel, not current quotations; the tight lower end depends on finding suitable low-cost bookings. Add flights, extra cover, child seats, parking, tolls, admission and tours.
For illustration: 9 nights × EUR 190 = EUR 1,710; 7 rental days × EUR 80 = EUR 560; 10 food days × EUR 90 = EUR 900; and EUR 170 fuel produce EUR 3,340 for the family, or EUR 334 per travel day, before those extras. These are assumptions: enter the price for your actual room occupancy and age-based tickets.
