Orientation
Give wildlife its own day after the coast
Addo changes the focus of a Garden Route trip from coastal towns to slow drives and patient observation. Two nights leave a whole park day without an accommodation move.
Your base determines the approach. Matyholweni is near Colchester and the N2; Main Camp is a different location. Match the accommodation, correct gate and any Gqeberha flight before choosing a route.

With seven coastal days, I would omit Addo or replace a coastal block. In a ten-day plan, two nights by the park make the safari a deliberate extension rather than a brief diversion.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Following the shortest app route blindly
SANParks advises against the R335 approach through Motherwell. Use its recommended approaches and check them against the accommodation location.
Reading camp hours as safari access
Check wildlife-viewing hours for the correct entrance separately. Late accommodation access does not permit a self-drive night safari.
Assuming the room includes admission
Daily conservation fees, rooms and guided activities are separate costs. Check the relevant nationality and age category.
Travel planning answers
Planning Addo
Which entrance suits the approach?+
Matyholweni near Colchester sits close to the N2 and is practical from Gqeberha. For a Main Camp stay, check the matching approach and the time needed to travel through the park separately.
Are camp access and game-viewing hours identical?+
Do not assume so. Check current hours for your gate and game-viewing areas with SANParks; late camp access does not permit a night self-drive.
How long should I stay?+
Two nights provide a full park day. With one night, the approach needs to be short enough that wildlife viewing is not squeezed into the day’s remaining hours.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
For an extension with a dedicated safari day after the coast. Two nights around Addo make more sense than passing through just before a flight.
Skip if
With only five or seven days for the coast, drop Addo or remove another substantial section.
With kids
Break self-drive visits into shorter blocks with pauses at designated places. Check age limits before reserving a guided drive; a child entry rate does not mean every activity accepts children.

Guide details
Two nights for a safari day
Addo extends a coastal trip with a separate focus. Allow two nights around the park if you want a full wildlife-viewing day. A guaranteed sighting is not part of the itinerary.
Matyholweni or Main Camp
Matyholweni lies near Colchester and the N2, convenient when approaching from Gqeberha. Main Camp is a different location. Choose the stay and entrance first, then the drive; travelling through the park needs room for slow driving and observations.
Self-drive or a guided activity
Decide between driving yourself on open visitor routes and booking a guided activity. Check gate hours and rules with SANParks. Stay on designated roads, remain in the vehicle outside marked places where exiting is allowed, and give animals space instead of blocking their movement for a photograph. A long onward drive that afternoon reduces the useful park day.
Gate, daily fee and booking
Save the specific entrance, accommodation, admission costs and guided-activity meeting point. Distinguish reception hours, camp access and game-viewing hours. Refresh these details before driving.
SANParks advises against the R335 through Motherwell. Use its recommended approach to the booked entrance rather than accepting the shortest navigation route without checking it.
As a dated example, SANParks lists an Addo daily conservation fee of ZAR 492 per international visitor aged 12 or over, valid through 31 October 2026. Two adults therefore add ZAR 984 per park day. Children aged 2–11 pay ZAR 246. For later dates or other categories, use the official rates; accommodation and guided activities are separate costs.
Daily budgets are rough per-person allowances for two adults sharing a room and car, including food and running costs. Flights, park admission and booked activities are additional; combine actual quotes using the budget guide.
