Orientation

Decide how far to go first

Ten days can cover a Christchurch-to-Queenstown journey with lakes, mountains and a Milford day. Abel Tasman sits too far north for this version. Two weeks add nights in the south without requiring another long driving section.

These plans include arrival day. Ten travel days mean nine nights. Flight times, rental returns and any drive back to Christchurch reduce the available sightseeing time.

Alex's Take

With two weeks, I would spend the extra nights in Aoraki, Wānaka and Te Anau. The West Coast deserves a separate extension; driving through solely for a glacier photograph consumes a lot of time.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Planning map time as real driving time

Viewpoints, fuel stops, weather, road works and narrow roads make many days longer.

Booking too many one-night stops

That turns the South Island into packing, driving and checking in.

Combining Milford, the West Coast and Abel Tasman without priorities

All three are strong, but not every short route needs all three.

Travel planning answers

South Island itinerary questions

Is the ten-day itinerary a loop?+

No. It starts in Christchurch and ends in Queenstown. Check one-way rental terms and suitable flights; returning the car to Christchurch requires extra time.

Where does Milford Sound fit?+

Give it a full excursion day between two nights in Te Anau. Do not also plan to continue to Wānaka that day.

Can Abel Tasman fit into two weeks?+

Yes, by dropping part of the south or adding a domestic flight. In this southern itinerary it is reserved for the three-week version.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Useful for a first trip when you need to settle the northern limit and decide on a one-way rental before booking accommodation.

Skip if

For a dedicated hiking or skiing holiday, choose two suitable bases instead of following the whole road trip.

With kids

Keep driving blocks shorter, use stays with kitchens, plan flexible breaks and keep offline notes for bookings, routes and expenses.

Practical take

Ten days: Christchurch to Queenstown

Keep day 1 for arrival in Christchurch. On day 2, drive to the Mackenzie region; two nights allow time for Tekapo and an Aoraki day, depending on weather and where you stay. Spend days 4–5 in Wānaka and days 6–7 in Te Anau, with a separate Milford excursion. Days 8–9 belong to Queenstown, followed by departure on day 10. That is nine nights, not ten full sightseeing days.

How it fits the route

14 days: more time in the same southern region

One night in Christchurch, two in Tekapo, two in Aoraki or Twizel, three in Wānaka, three in Te Anau and two in Queenstown total 13 nights. The extra stays leave room for walks and poor weather. To reduce hotel changes, combine the Tekapo and Aoraki nights in one base and accept a longer drive to the other destination.

21 days: add the northern loop

A circuit from Christchurch has 20 nights: 1 Christchurch, 3 Mackenzie Country, 3 Te Anau, 2 Queenstown, 2 Wānaka, 3 split between Franz Josef/Fox and the northern West Coast, 4 Nelson/Marahau, and 2 on the return to Christchurch. Choose the final two stops after deciding the return route. Going via Kaikōura differs substantially from returning through the interior. Departure is on day 21.

Typical trade-offs

The three-week circuit still contains several long driving days. Drop Abel Tasman if hiking or a slower pace matters more. An extra night gives you a weather buffer, not a guarantee that a specific outing will run. Keep booked boat trips and long walks away from major transfer days.

Where to go next

The driving guide covers one-way rentals and driving-day decisions. Plan Milford Sound and Abel Tasman as separate excursion days.
