Orientation

Decisions to make before hiring a vehicle

Many South Island journeys follow rural roads rather than motorways. A compact car can be easier to manage than a large camper if left-side driving is new to you. Settle the route, luggage needs and overnight stops first.

The budget bands are rough whole-trip estimates per person per day for two adults sharing a room and vehicle, including food and running costs. They are not rental quotes; international flights and expensive excursions are extra.

Alex's Take

I would spend the first night in Christchurch after a long-haul flight and collect the car when rested. An extra city day is easier to plan than a first long rural drive with jet lag.

Mini itinerary

  1. 1Before booking: confirm licence documents, vehicle size and return location.
  2. 2At collection: check controls, existing damage and rental terms together.
  3. 3Before each drive: check road conditions, a fuel stop and arrival time including breaks.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Comparing rental rates alone

Include one-way fees, insurance or excess, additional drivers and, for campers, overnight sites.

Pulling out on the wrong side after a break

Remind each other to keep left before setting off, especially after photo stops on quiet roads.

Approaching a one-lane bridge without reading the signs

Slow down, check priority signs and look for vehicles already on the bridge.

Travel planning answers

Driving questions

Do I need a translated driving licence?+

If your licence is not in English, you need an appropriate English translation or an international driving permit alongside the valid original. Check current NZTA requirements and the rental supplier’s document rules.

Is a camper cheaper than a car and rooms?+

Not necessarily. Compare rental, insurance, fuel and campsites against a car and accommodation for the same nights. Vehicle size and daily water, waste and power arrangements matter too.

Should I choose a loop or a one-way rental?+

A Christchurch–Queenstown one-way trip avoids the return drive, but may add rental fees or change flight costs. Compare the total and how you would use the extra time.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

A rental car suits travelers who want flexible stops outside the cities and feel comfortable with left-side driving and winding roads.

Skip if

Compare buses and guided outings if you would rather not drive; Milford Sound can also be planned as an organised day trip.

With kids

Reserve suitable child seats with the supplier and keep the collection day short. Keep snacks and spare clothes within reach without unpacking the entire boot.

Practical take

Check NZTA’s overseas-licence requirements before booking. A licence that is not in English needs an accepted English translation or international driving permit, and you still need the valid original. Ask the rental supplier which documents it accepts.

How it fits the route

Choose collection and return locations alongside your flights. A Christchurch–Queenstown one-way rental can be worthwhile if avoiding the return drive gives you more time at the places you care about. For a loop via the West Coast, keep a buffer between long mountain-road journeys and your flight home.

Check current road information with NZTA before each stage. Add breaks and sightseeing to navigation estimates. After an overnight flight, a night in the city is a better starting point than heading straight into the mountains.

Typical trade-offs

A camper combines transport and accommodation but needs overnight-site planning and regular servicing. A lakeside car park is not automatically a permitted overnight stop. Check local camping rules for every intended site before relying on it for the night.

Choose a vehicle whose width and turning circle you can judge comfortably. At one-lane bridges, read the priority signs and check the bridge is clear even if you have priority. Refuel before remote stretches and check the opening hours of the stop you intend to use.

Save it for WanderSpend

Keep the rental agreement, breakdown number, accommodation addresses and shared expenses together. Download offline maps separately in your navigation app; saved documents do not replace navigation or current road alerts.

Where to go next

Use the South Island itinerary to divide your overnight stays. Compare whole-trip costs in the budget guide before choosing a car or camper.
