Orientation
What the daily ranges cover
These are rough editorial planning allowances per person for two adults sharing a vehicle and a room. They cover accommodation, each person’s vehicle share, running costs and food. International flights and expensive boat, flight or guided excursions are extra. These are not current quotes.
Local prices are often charged in NZD. Compare booking quotes in one currency first; the EUR bands provide orientation only. Solo travellers bear shared fixed costs alone and may spend substantially more per person.

I would price the vehicle and overnight stays for the same dates first. A campervan does not automatically save money: sites, fuel, equipment and protection packages belong in the comparison.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Counting a room twice
Record a room for two once, then split the cost.
Comparing campervans without site fees
Include suitable overnight sites and the actual rental terms. Free parking is not a reliable accommodation budget.
Treating every day as an average day
A Milford excursion costs differently from self-guided walks. Give booked activities separate budget lines.
Travel planning answers
South Island budget questions
Are these amounts per person or vehicle?+
The daily bands are per person for two adults sharing a room and vehicle. Rental and room quotes are usually total charges instead; check each booking.
Are flights and excursions included?+
International flights and expensive booked excursions are excluded. Add actual quotes for your travel dates.
Is a campervan cheaper?+
Only a total-cost comparison can answer that. Put hire, protection, fuel and overnight sites against a car plus accommodation.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Useful before booking a vehicle: a low daily hire rate can become the more expensive option once insurance, one-way fees and overnight costs are added.
Skip if
If a package holiday is already booked, focus on meals, activities and transfers excluded from that package.
With kids
Keep driving blocks shorter, use stays with kitchens, plan flexible breaks and keep offline notes for bookings, routes and expenses.

Practical take
Use actual quotes once your dates are fixed. The daily bands offer orientation for two adults travelling together, not a live price check. Summer holidays, public holidays, vehicle category and late bookings can change the result.
How it fits the route
A calculation example, not a price quote: for 14 days and 13 nights, a vehicle at an assumed EUR 80 daily costs EUR 1,120; rooms at EUR 150 per night cost EUR 1,950; fuel and parking total EUR 350; and food for two at EUR 70 daily costs EUR 980. That comes to EUR 4,400 jointly, or EUR 2,200 per person and about EUR 157 per person per travel day. Flights, extra protection packages, one-way charges and booked excursions are absent from this example and must be added.
Typical trade-offs
A shorter route reduces running costs, but an extra night can outweigh that saving. Compare the whole trip amount. A kitchen can simplify meals; still compare the room price and consider how often you actually want to cook.
For a campervan, include the full hire charge with the equipment and protection you want, plus suitable overnight sites. Do not use the pictured lakeshore or a blanket assumption of free camping as a budget basis.
Save it for WanderSpend
Record shared expenses once, with currency and who paid. Separate prepaid bookings from the remaining travel funds. Card deposits require available funds but are not initially a final trip expense.
Where to go next
Settle the route first. Then use the driving guide to identify the terms and charges to check in your rental quote.
