Orientation
A connection with worthwhile intermediate stays
The direct plan runs from Christchurch through Mackenzie Country and Wānaka to Queenstown. An eight-night example fits into nine travel days if your arrival and departure times allow it.
Milford Sound is a separate southern extension via Te Anau. The West Coast also takes you away from this route. Both deserve additional nights rather than being treated as incidental stops.

I would compare the one-way rental alongside the flights before reserving individual hotels. A good sequence of rooms is less useful if the vehicle return forces a long journey back.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Planning map time as real driving time
Viewpoints, fuel stops, weather, road works and narrow roads make many days longer.
Booking too many one-night stops
That turns the South Island into packing, driving and checking in.
Combining Milford, the West Coast and Abel Tasman without priorities
All three are strong, but not every short route needs all three.
Travel planning answers
Planning Christchurch to Queenstown
How many nights does this example need?+
Eight: one in Christchurch, three in Mackenzie Country, two in Wānaka and two in Queenstown. Departure follows on day nine.
Does the nine-day plan include Milford?+
No. Add at least two nights in Te Anau with a separate Milford excursion day, or remove other stops.
Can I reverse the route?+
Yes. Compare flight times, vehicle availability, return hours and one-way fees in both directions.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
A useful one-way journey when arrival in Christchurch and departure from Queenstown suit your flights and you want to explore the lakes and mountains between them.
Skip if
If the vehicle must return to Christchurch, budget the drive back as a separate journey section; this one-way plan does not include it.
With kids
Keep driving blocks shorter, use stays with kitchens, plan flexible breaks and keep offline notes for bookings, routes and expenses.
Budget range

Practical take
This guide helps connect two airports. The broader South Island itinerary covers longer variants. Here the main decision is which intermediate stays make sense between Christchurch and Queenstown.
How it fits the route
Allow eight nights: one Christchurch, three Tekapo or Twizel/Aoraki, two Wānaka and two Queenstown. A single Mackenzie base avoids a hotel move but lengthens the drive to the other lake or mountain area. Choose it according to whether Tekapo or Aoraki is the priority.
Typical trade-offs
Milford is not on the way to Queenstown. Add Te Anau with two nights and a full excursion day. The West Coast also needs a different route. If your return flight leaves from Christchurch, plan the drive back, final overnight stop and rental return separately.
The daily bands are rough per-person figures for two adults sharing a room and vehicle, including food and running costs. International flights and expensive excursions are extra.
Save it for WanderSpend
Record both rental stations, opening hours, charges and return conditions. Keep the actual flight times beside the final overnight stay. Download navigation maps separately in your map app.
Where to go next
The Aoraki guide helps weigh a park stay against a longer approach. Queenstown and Wānaka covers the division of the final nights.
