See the mountains from the valley
Aoraki/Mount Cook offers a choice between shorter viewpoint walks and a longer outing through Hooker Valley. For a first visit, I would give one walk enough time rather than drive between several valleys in a day.
Staying in the village shortens the journey to the trailhead; Twizel is an alternative with extra driving. Budget bands are rough whole-trip costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, including food and running costs, but excluding international flights and scenic flights.
Do not book solely around one summit photograph. If you would enjoy the valley walk with changing cloud cover, the detour has more to offer than a brief hope for a clear view.

Relying on an old closure report
DOC lists a new second swing bridge opened in July 2026. Check current notices for your walking day rather than relying on older blog posts.
Treating Twizel as a trailhead stay
DOC gives roughly 50 minutes from Twizel to White Horse Hill and 90 minutes from Tekapo. Include both directions in the day.
Reading summer images as a weather forecast
Wind, rain and rapid temperature changes can affect the outing outside winter too.

How long is the Hooker Valley Track?+
DOC’s current stages add up to about 5 km and 90 minutes each way: roughly 10 km and 3 hours of walking back to the same car park. Add breaks and check current notices.
Can I take a shorter walk?+
Yes. Mueller Lookout before the first swing bridge makes a shorter turnaround point. Kea Point is another viewpoint walk; choose according to weather, your group and the time available.
Do I need to stay overnight?+
Not necessarily, but a village stay avoids a repeat approach drive and gives more weather flexibility. From Twizel or Tekapo, add the return drive to your walking time.

Worth it
Choose Aoraki if you want half a day or more on foot in an alpine valley, rather than just a stop beside Lake Pukaki.
Skip if
Skip the detour if roads or weather are unsuitable, or if you would only go for a guaranteed clear view of the summit.
With kids
Start towards Mueller Lookout and decide whether to extend the walk. The full Hooker Valley return trip is a substantial outing rather than a quick stroll to the lake.

Practical take
Allow half a day for Hooker Valley including breaks, parking and getting ready. The current DOC page again describes the walk to Hooker Lake; the new second swing bridge opened in July 2026. Older search results may still show the earlier partial closure. Check the notices for your actual visit nonetheless.
How it fits the route
Aoraki is a detour at the end of SH80 from the route between Tekapo and Twizel. For a walking day, I would stay in the village or Twizel rather than add a long onward drive to Queenstown. Lake Pukaki viewpoints fit along the approach, but do not replace time in the valley.
Typical trade-offs
Hooker Valley is the longer option. For a shorter visit, turn around at Mueller Lookout before the first swing bridge, or choose Kea Point. Drop an additional walk first if your group is moving more slowly.
White Horse Hill charges for parking; check payment instructions before setting off. Stay on the tracks and out of glacial lakes. With ice, strong winds or unsuitable roads, a shorter plan is not automatically a safe outing.
