Orientation

Choose the trip that fits

May and September are not interchangeable cheap months. May emphasizes town visits and the early season; after summer, September often favors swimming, while some services thin out later in autumn.

Northerly winds can shape the Aegean summer. Corfu in the Ionian Sea, the Cyclades and different Cretan coasts therefore need more than one blanket wind or rain statement.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

If swimming is the main reason to travel, I would compare September with high summer. For villages, archaeology and longer days ashore, I would look at May or June. In either case, first confirm that the chosen transport and accommodation actually operate.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Equating May with reliably warm swimming

Comfortable air can coincide with cooler sea water. Make land visits an equally worthwhile part of the trip.

Treating September as an empty cheap season

Popular towns and room locations can remain well booked. Compare the actual date.

Seeing summer wind only as cooling

Wind can affect beach choice, boat tours and ferries. Feeling cooler does not necessarily mean easy conditions.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

May or September for swimming?+

As a general planning trade-off, sea water warmed through summer favors September. It still does not guarantee comfortable temperatures or calm conditions at a specific beach.

When does the meltemi matter?+

The northerly summer wind particularly affects the Aegean. Do not assign fixed wind strength by calendar month; check the current forecast and operator notices.

Does October suit island hopping?+

It can with confirmed services and open accommodation. Reduce island changes if fewer departures and alternatives are available.

Can I visit Crete or Rhodes in April?+

It can work for towns and culture. Beach businesses and longer walks need separate checks for operation, weather and access.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

When balancing swimming, sightseeing, available connections and less busy places.

Skip if

A month name guarantees neither comfortable swimming, calm seas nor open beach businesses.

With kids

During fixed summer holidays, prioritize short journeys, shade, midday breaks and few ferry changes. Assess wind and waves at the actual beach each day.

Guide details

Weigh May against September

May suits lanes, archaeological sites and days with more walking ashore. Pleasant air does not automatically mean warm sea water. If children want long daily swims, land activities should be an equally appealing part of the holiday rather than a disappointed fallback.

September generally favors a mixture of swimming and town visits after the sea has warmed through summer. Wind, rainy spells and local water temperatures can still vary. Popular Santorini caldera rooms and coastal towns do not become cheap or empty simply because the month changes.

Compare the same room category, occupancy and all transfers for both dates. A cheaper room with a much less useful ferry connection does not automatically produce a better trip.

June, July and August

The Greek meteorological service describes hot, dry summers and northerly summer winds in the Aegean. June can already bring hot days; traveling before the main holidays does not prevent a heatwave.

With fixed July or August holidays, schedule visits such as Lindos early, allow a longer midday break and prioritize beach shade. Fewer moves help more than trying to escape heat by constantly adding boat trips.

The meltemi and the actual island

The meltemi, or Etesian wind, is a northerly Aegean summer wind. It can feel cooling while affecting waves, boat routes and ferries. The forecast and operator’s instructions determine the day’s plan; a high-speed ferry does not guarantee operation.

The western Ionian Islands are in a different area. On Crete, coast orientation and mountains alter local conditions. Search for the actual island and coast rather than “Greece weather” alone.

April, October and winter

In April, a town-based stay on Crete or Rhodes may work better than a tight sequence of small islands. Check accommodation, restaurants and every connection. An operating ferry port does not mean all seasonal visitor services are running.

An early October date can still suit a beach trip; business opening and alternative activities become more important later in autumn. In winter, plan around towns and everyday life rather than automatically available beach tours. More rain and weather-related changes belong in the seasonal comparison described by the national weather service.

Turn the calendar into a bookable trip

Decide first whether swimming, culture or boat excursions are essential. Choose an island group, check offered services and leave alternatives in the daily plan. Put the final island transfer before the flight day, as in the worked itineraries.

For a longer land-based visit, use the Crete guide. For a choice between caldera and beach time, compare Naxos and Paros. Prices remain specific to the date; the budget guide provides the calculation structure.
