Orientation

Choose the trip that fits

Chania anchors a western old-town and coastal trip. Heraklion is the base for Knossos and the Archaeological Museum. Agios Nikolaos shifts the stay to eastern Mirabello Bay.

Five days suit one base, seven allow two, and ten can use three selected locations. A southern stay replaces a northern focus rather than automatically adding another hotel.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

For a first week with a cultural focus, I would choose four nights around Chania and two in Heraklion. For a beach-led trip, replace Heraklion with two nights at a southern base and leave Knossos for another visit.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Treating Samaria as a quick stop

The traverse ends at Agia Roumeli; boat and land transfers belong to the same long excursion day.

Confusing Chania and Heraklion arrival

Match airport and hotel region; check one-way rental terms if using different airports.

Visiting every western beach in a day

Falasarna, Elafonisi and Balos have separate approaches. Choose one main destination per day.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

Are five days enough for Crete?+

For one part, yes: four nights around Chania leave three full excursion days. They are too short for both west and east.

Do I need a car throughout?+

Not for old-town days. Selected car days can help with scattered beaches and villages. Compare parking, rental duration and the destinations you actually want.

Should I plan Samaria with small children?+

The full route is roughly 16km with substantial rocky descent. It is outside our short family plan; assess hiking experience and current access.

Which base suits the south coast?+

Paleochora is an alternative for a southwestern coastal stay. Allocate two or more nights deliberately and shorten another region.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

For a self-contained island trip mixing towns, coast and selected cultural or walking days without extra ferry moves.

Skip if

With five days, do not try to cover the western coast, Samaria, Heraklion and the far east together.

With kids

Choose a nearby beach instead of daily island crossings. The roughly 16km Samaria traverse is not a casual family walk.

Guide details

Chania and the western coast

Choose Chania when the old town and coastal destinations are the main focus. Keep a separate day for its harbor and lanes. For a beach day, select Falasarna or Elafonisi as the main destination; a western circuit with Balos added is not an unhurried swimming day.

For accommodation beside the water, compare coastal settlements outside the old town and their connections to Chania. An atmospheric old-town room does not necessarily come with parking at the door.

Heraklion and eastern Crete

Heraklion suits Knossos and the Archaeological Museum. Give the cultural element a full day and check admission and opening separately. This is a different focus from swimming outside the hotel every day.

Agios Nikolaos suits Mirabello Bay with an excursion to Kritsa or toward Elounda. Three nights here should not mean driving back west daily. The official Crete overview explains the regional distinctions.

Nights for five, seven and ten days

  • 5 days/4 nights: all nights around Chania. Arrive on day one, use three full days for town and selected coastal destinations, and depart on day five.
  • 7 days/6 nights: four Chania nights, two Heraklion. Day five is the transfer, day six the cultural visit and more city time, and day seven departure.
  • 10 days/9 nights: four Chania, two Heraklion, three Agios Nikolaos. The east receives day seven for arrival and two full days. Day ten is for reaching the airport, returning the car and flying.

For southern beach time, Paleochora replaces Heraklion in the seven-day version. That means dropping the Heraklion cultural block. Additional islands such as Santorini are outside these night counts.

Samaria needs its own excursion day

The classic traverse runs from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli and totals approximately 16km, including the final stretch to the village. Boat and land transfers follow. A car parked at the northern entrance is not waiting at the exit.

Treat this as a demanding full walking day with an arranged return. The former park website is an archive; use NECCA for current access and tickets. Our short family itinerary does not automatically include this walk.

Arrival, car and budget

Choose Chania or Heraklion airport from the first and last bases. Different airports may save backtracking but require suitable flights and permitted one-way car rental. Avoid a major visit before a tight vehicle return deadline.

Calculate rooms per night at actual occupancy, meals per day and the car for rental days only. Add fuel, parking, admission and boat or bus connections separately. The budget guide shows how to share joint expenses; a generic Santorini daily figure does not describe this Crete trip.
