Orientation
Choose St. Bartholomä or the longer Salet outing
Two nights in Berchtesgaden or Schönau leave a full Königssee day between arrival and departure. Boat schedules determine how much of the lake you can visit.
Budget bands are rough editorial base costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room, including meals and a vehicle or local transport. Flights, mountain railways, boats, admission and special tolls are extra.

With limited time I would choose St. Bartholomä. Salet and Obersee form a longer option, rather than an effortless afternoon extension.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Resolve before booking
Missing the last boat cannot be fixed with a lakeshore walk: there is no shore path back from St. Bartholomä or Salet.
Travel planning answers
Planning questions
How much time does this plan need?+
Two nights protect one full boat day. One night better suits a short stop when arrival and onward travel allow it.
When should I shorten the plan?+
Omit Salet if the current timetable does not serve it or the final boat leaves too little walking time.
What matters with children?+
A boat ride and short St. Bartholomä stop are easier to manage with small children than adding a long Obersee walk.

Guide details
Choose St. Bartholomä or the longer Salet outing
Start at Seelände in Schönau. The operator gives about 35 minutes each way to St. Bartholomä and just under an hour to Salet. Add boarding, waiting and time ashore. Check Salet’s seasonal service in the current timetable instead of assuming year-round access.
Arrange the return first
Record the last return boat and set an earlier walking turnaround. St. Bartholomä and Salet are not linked by a shore path; demanding mountain routes are not an improvised replacement for a missed boat. SUPs, inflatable boats and canoes are not permitted on Königssee.
Where to stay
Schönau shortens the approach to Seelände; Berchtesgaden suits town time and other outings. If the lake is misty, do not automatically add a summit trip. A town afternoon is easier to move than a long booked transfer. Retaining the lake day and adding a Salzburg excursion requires another free day in your stay.
