Orientation

Distinguish spring from summer

Choose the season around your main activity: cities, lakeshores, mountain railways and alpine hikes need different conditions. Sunshine in a valley says little about snow higher up.

Budget bands are rough editorial base costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room, including meals and a vehicle or local transport. Flights, mountain railways, boats, admission and special tolls are extra.

Alex's Take

For an initial mixed trip I would compare June and September, after checking the chosen mountain services and Munich’s event calendar.

Resolve before booking

September is not automatically quiet in Munich: Oktoberfest may fall within the same dates.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

How much time does this plan need?+

Choose the season before booking; refresh actual weather and operating information shortly before each outing.

When should I shorten the plan?+

With fixed dates, stop looking for a perfect month: reduce the mountain aims and build a suitable city or valley alternative.

What matters with children?+

Let a lakeside or city day stand on its own. A cold summit is not an essential counterpart to a warm hotel pool.

Distinguish spring from summer

Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck can form a city trip without high-level hiking. Higher paths may still be wintry in spring; a running cable car does not prove that a walking route is clear of snow. Summer permits more time outdoors, but check the specific outing’s forecast and thunderstorm development.

Compare June and September deliberately

Both are editorial starting points rather than promises of prices or views. In June, check how far the mountain season has progressed. A September Munich stay also needs an Oktoberfest check: in 2026 it runs from 19 September to 4 October. Compare actual offers and operating dates instead of relying on a blanket shoulder-season rule.

Winter is a different trip

For winter I would choose two suitable bases and deliberate winter activities, rather than reuse a summer lakes-castles-passes circuit. Equipment, shorter days and operational interruptions affect transfers. Museums and town time are full programme days; do not reserve an exposed outing merely to fill an empty date.

A shorter winter trip without skiing can work from one city. The Innsbruck or Salzburg comparison helps you choose around city activities, mountain views and the journey there. Arrange indoor visits and weather-dependent outings with room to change their order.
