Orientation

A ten-day, nine-night example

Rooms and a vehicle drive the base cost of this route; Zugspitze railways, the Königssee boat and castle tours are separate choices on top.

Budget bands are rough editorial base costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room, including meals and a vehicle or local transport. Flights, mountain railways, boats, admission and special tolls are extra.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

For two travellers, I would calculate room nights and vehicle days first. Only then choose whether two expensive mountain-railway outings fit the priorities.

Mini itinerary

  1. 1Count each room per night and each vehicle per hire day once.
  2. 2Add food per person, with fuel and parking as shared expenses.
  3. 3Price lifts, boats, castles, tolls and flights separately from actual offers.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Resolve before booking

A mountain-railway ticket and a motorway vignette are separate costs. Neither is automatically included in car hire.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

How much time does this plan need?+

Use the calculation before booking transport and rooms; dates, occupancy and cancellation terms change prices.

When should I shorten the plan?+

For a rail trip, replace vehicle costs with actual tickets; do not budget both a car and an intercity train for the same journey.

What matters with children?+

Families need actual room occupancy and children’s ages. An adult average cannot simply be multiplied by everyone travelling.

Guide details

A ten-day, nine-night example

Hypothetical calculation for two adults, not a current quote: nine room nights at EUR 160 total EUR 1,440; eight rental days at EUR 65 cost EUR 520; food for two at EUR 70 daily costs EUR 700; assumed fuel and parking add EUR 180. Total EUR 2,840, or EUR 1,420 per person and EUR 142 per person per travel day. The first two city days have no rental car.

Add the missing items

Flights, vignette, section tolls, castle tours, boats, mountain railways and extra protection are excluded from this example. Obtain quotes for your actual days. Compare the specific mountain product on Zugspitze’s website and the road-and-vehicle toll with ASFINAG.

One base can cost more as well as less

Visiting Füssen and Garmisch from one hotel saves a move but adds driving. Compare the whole amount, parking and time included. Keep prepaid bookings separate from outstanding expenses; a card deposit ties up available funds but is not initially a final travel cost.

For a winter trip without skiing, start with the city choice in the Innsbruck or Salzburg comparison. Then price room nights, arrival transport, local journeys and admission for the same dates. Keep an optional mountain-railway trip as a separate item, with its dependence on suitable weather in mind.
