Orientation
Salzburg on both sides of the river
Salzburg is the city base; Hallstatt is a separate excursion or lakeside stay. For both, I would reserve three nights and two full days.
Budget bands are rough editorial base costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room, including meals and a vehicle or local transport. Flights, mountain railways, boats, admission and special tolls are extra.

I would add Hallstatt only if the village itself matters to you. Another half day beside the Salzach is a worthwhile use of a Salzburg stay too.

Avoid These Common Mistakes
Resolve before booking
Hallstatt station is not in the village centre. A rail arrival also involves the ferry to the market area.
Travel planning answers
Planning questions
How much time does this plan need?+
Three nights provide a Salzburg day and a Hallstatt day. With two nights, I would prioritise Salzburg.
When should I shorten the plan?+
Omit Hallstatt if getting there would consume your only free Salzburg day.
What matters with children?+
Use Mirabell Gardens and a limited old-town walk. For Hallstatt, settle the return connection and meal break first.

Salzburg on both sides of the river
Combine Mirabell Gardens with a crossing of the Salzach into the old town. Getreidegasse and the cathedral area fit the same city walk. Give Hohensalzburg Fortress a separate visit, including the ascent or funicular and appropriate admission; it is not a photograph between bus departures.
For a winter stay without skiing, the Innsbruck and Salzburg guide compares the two bases through culture, mountain views and alternatives for poor weather. Decide how much city time you want before giving a Hallstatt excursion its own place in the trip.
Plan the whole Hallstatt journey
For a rail visit, coordinate train and ferry: the operator publishes the Bahnhof–Hallstatt Markt connection. Record the return before booking another activity. By car, add parking and the walk into the village; an accommodation address does not itself grant driving access to the old town.
Stay for lake time rather than a compulsory photograph
For several lakeside days, accommodation in the Salzkammergut can be more useful than commuting from Salzburg. I would avoid a hotel move just for one village photograph. Stay on public paths and respect residential entrances; the view is not a reason to enter private stairs or gardens.
