Algarve Road Trip Itinerary: 3, 5 and 7 Days

3 days in the Algarve

Plan two nights in one base, arriving on day 1 and departing on day 3. In Lagos, that means one full day for Ponta da Piedade and a suitable cove, with old-town time on the arrival evening. If airport transfers consume too much of that time around your flights, choose Faro with town and a confirmed island service, or Tavira with town and Ilha de Tavira. These are alternatives, not a three-day circuit.

5 days in the Algarve

The western version uses four nights in Lagos. Leave Tavira and the eastern islands for another trip.

• Day 1: arrive in Faro, transfer to Lagos and take a short old-town walk; night 1.
• Day 2: Ponta da Piedade from above or by booked boat, followed by a beach break; night 2.
• Day 3: Carvoeiro and Algar Seco with one selected coastal stop. For the full Seven Hanging Valleys trail, omit the extra towns and arrange your return; night 3.
• Day 4: Sagres fortress and Cabo de São Vicente OR another beach day near Lagos; night 4.
• Day 5: return to the airport with car-return and check-in time. A morning in town only fits a sufficiently late flight.

If island beaches matter more, replace the whole western version with four nights in Tavira or Faro. Do not insert a Tavira ferry day as a final addition to the Lagos trip.

7 days in the Algarve

For east and west, use three nights in Tavira and three in Lagos. Travel east first, then through the central coast towards the west, returning to Faro on departure day.

• Day 1: arrive in Faro and transfer to Tavira; Tavira night 1.
• Day 2: Ilha de Tavira with a confirmed return; Tavira night 2.
• Day 3: Tavira town and Cacela Velha as a village/viewpoint outing; Tavira night 3.
• Day 4: drive to Lagos with a limited stop in Carvoeiro/Algar Seco OR at the Marinha viewpoint. Secure luggage out of sight in the car; Lagos night 1.
• Day 5: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade and a beach; Lagos night 2.
• Day 6: Sagres/cape OR a flexible repeat coastal day; Lagos night 3.
• Day 7: return to Faro and depart.

This gives four full days at the bases plus a transfer day between arrival and departure. An entire Faro island day and a full hiking day are not additional inclusions. Extend the stay or replace other outings for those. For an early flight, move night 6 to Faro and shorten day 6 accordingly. Sunset at the cape is then an unsuitable final obligation.

Cars, ferries and bookings

A car helps with the central cliff coast and Sagres. For Tavira town and the ferry from the town quay or Quatro Águas, you need a suitable approach, not necessarily a car driven every day. Compare rental start and transfers as a total. The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025; check other roads and rental service charges separately.

Benagil remains an optional boat experience governed by access rules. A booked slot replaces other activities that day; use the cave rules and hiking plan. Keeping lodging, transport and activities separate makes cuts visible in the budget.
