Benagil expectations

Treat Benagil as a brief visit from the water. The Portuguese maritime authority, AMN, prohibits swimming into the cave and landing on the beach inside. Its 2025 navigation amendment confirms the guide requirement for non-motorized trips. Old photographs of people standing on the cave beach are not a useful plan for your visit.

Compare departure harbor, time on the water and cancellation terms for rough seas before booking a tour. A reservation does not guarantee cave entry in unsuitable conditions. If the coast is your main interest, Carvoeiro, Algar Seco and Praia da Marinha can make a worthwhile day without the cave.

Carvoeiro and Algar Seco

Carvoeiro's town beach and central restaurants suit an arrival evening. The clifftop boardwalk heads towards Algar Seco; the lower rock passages and steps there involve a different approach from the upper walk. You do not need to descend into every opening to appreciate the coast. In strong wind, wet conditions or a closure, stay on permitted upper paths or in town.

Two nights create one full outing day; three allow separate hiking and boat days. With a single day, choose the longer trail OR Carvoeiro/Algar Seco with a beach visit. Covering the whole coast and a cave tour is not a short stroll.

Seven Hanging Valleys: plan the return

The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos connects Praia de Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha. Lagoa municipality gives a distance of 5.7 kilometres for that connection. This is one way; returning along the same path makes around 11.4 kilometres. The municipal reference establishes the route, not today's opening of every section.

An editorial allowance of roughly three hours covers one way with short stops, with more time needed in heat or at a slower pace. Arrange transport back to your starting point for a one-way walk. Without a confirmed transfer, choose a shorter out-and-back section and turn around in good time. Carvoeiro town centre is not either endpoint and adds distance.

The trail follows uneven clifftop terrain. Take sturdy shoes, water and sun protection; it is not a pushchair promenade. Keep to marked paths and outside barriers around sinkholes and cliff edges. Looking down towards Benagil's opening does not provide walking access into the cave.

Praia da Marinha

You can appreciate the rock formations from designated viewpoints above. Going to the beach adds a descent and a later climb; check access and signs on site. AMN advises keeping away from unstable cliffs. Do not seek shade directly below a rock face or assume another visitor's footprints mark a safe route.

Walking mainly costs time and return transport; boat tours are a separate expense. Confirm the meeting point and whether a quote is per person or per boat. Compare other beach types in the beach guide.
