For a first seven-day trip, I would usually split Lagos or Carvoeiro with Tavira or Faro. For five days, one strong base is often calmer than chasing the perfect town.

Booking by town name alone
Station, centre, beach and hotel can mean different journeys.

Essential before booking because the right base changes drive time, beach access, evening mood and total cost.
Skip if
Skip deep base planning only if you have one or two nights tied to Faro airport.
With kids
Families should favor apartments, easy parking, groceries and beaches with lower access friction.

Guide details
Lagos or Carvoeiro for the cliffs?
Lagos suits old-town evenings combined with Ponta da Piedade and a western outing. At the old-town edge, compare the walk and night noise; the marina side is closer to the station and some boat meeting points. Southern beach accommodation has a different location from the centre: “Lagos” in the name does not mean a short walk to everything.
Carvoeiro is the more focused base for Algar Seco and the coast around Marinha. The centre helps with restaurants by the town beach; a location towards Vale Centeanes better suits the coastal trail starting there. Check hills, steps and a confirmed parking space. A cheaper room outside town may require daily drives for meals and the beach.
Choose an Albufeira neighbourhood
Albufeira is not a uniform strip of hotels. The old town offers restaurants and access towards Praia dos Pescadores, but the address may involve slopes and nightlife. Oura/Montechoro better suits a trip where going out is a priority. Olhos de Água is a separate village and beach location farther east, not accommodation in the old-town centre.
Visit Portugal distinguishes the old-town and Oura/Montechoro nightlife areas. Check recent information about the exact room, its orientation and the walk after dark.
Tavira or Faro in the east?
Tavira beside the Gilão suits town walks and a dedicated Ilha de Tavira day. Check whether your trip uses the town quay or Quatro Águas; central accommodation does not automatically solve the latter approach. Cacela Velha remains a separate outing.
Faro works for Vila-Adentro, museums and boats from Porta Nova. The centre, Praia de Faro and airport are three different locations. A central room can shorten restaurant walks; an early flight still needs a suitable transfer. Choose airport accommodation using the actual route to the terminal.
Sagres and travelling without a car
Sagres merits an overnight base when the fortress, cape or a surfing programme justifies a full western day. For an occasional visit, an outing from Lagos is often enough; Sagres would be an awkward long-term base for Tavira's island beaches.
Without a car, Faro, Tavira or a suitable part of Lagos offer clearer starting points for town time and selected connections. Check the actual station with CP and the onward journey. Albufeira-Ferreiras is not the beachside old town; a station named after a town does not remove the final bus or taxi ride. For Sagres, Carvoeiro and remote beaches, explicitly plan the relevant bus or transfer.
Nights and the total price
For five travel days, four nights in one base provide three full days. With seven days, three nights in Tavira and three in Lagos give two full days in each plus a transfer day. For an early flight, move the final night to Faro; subtract it from the six existing nights rather than adding it.
Compare totals for the actual occupancy, cleaning, parking and stated local charges. An apartment earns its value through a usable kitchen or laundry, not the label alone. Match the itinerary with the budget example.
Daily budgets are editorial allowances per adult for two sharing a room and transport costs, including food and selected activities, excluding travel to the region. They are not current price quotes.
