Budget ranges by travel style

The bands apply per adult per travel day for two sharing a room, including their share of accommodation, transport, food and selected activities. Flights or travel to the Algarve are excluded. These are editorial planning allowances, not surveyed current offers. Solo travellers often carry the room and car cost alone; families need a calculation for their actual occupancy rather than four identical adult allowances.

“Lean” assumes simple accommodation, selected rental days and mostly free beach and town time. “Mid-range” allows more for location, restaurants and a paid tour. “Comfort” has no reliable upper limit. Compare the total for your dates; shoulder season does not guarantee a particular offer.

Worked example: seven days, six nights

This illustrates the method for two adults, not bookable prices:

• Shared room: 6 nights × an assumed EUR 120 = EUR 720.
• Rental car: 5 rental days × an assumed EUR 40 = EUR 200.
• Combined fuel and parking allowance: EUR 80.
• Food for both: 7 days × an assumed EUR 70 = EUR 490.
• Selected admissions and boat/ferry trips for both: EUR 100.

The total is EUR 1,590 together or EUR 795 per person, excluding travel to the region. A 15 percent reserve brings it to roughly EUR 1,830 together. Replace each assumption with your quote and add excluded rental extras or local accommodation charges. Six nights do not create seven hotel bills; conversely, pickup and return times can trigger another rental day.

Rental cars and the A22

The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. Do not insert a blanket A22 toll allowance into an Algarve-only route. This does not automatically apply to other Portuguese motorways. When arriving from Lisbon or travelling onward, check the roads actually used and any rental-company device service charges separately.

Beyond the base rate and fuel, account for agreed insurance, excess, additional drivers, child seats, parking and any one-way fee. A deposit ties up funds but is not automatically a trip expense. Compare fewer rental days with extra airport transfers: the shorter hire only saves money if the overall total falls.

Ferries, tours and shared spending

A return ticket to Ilha de Tavira, a guided nature excursion and a private boat trip provide different services. Compare return transport, passenger numbers and equipment. A Benagil booking does not buy a guaranteed stay on the cave beach; access rules limit the experience.

Agree how to split rooms and the car in advance, keeping personal purchases separate. For a EUR 96 restaurant bill split into four agreed equal shares, each person owes EUR 24 regardless of who paid. A shared expense list or WanderSpend helps distinguish payment from each person's share. Setting the route and nights per base first prevents duplicate transfer and lodging days.
