Guide details
One day in Viana do Castelo
Begin around Praça da República, then walk through the historic centre to the Lima waterfront. Choose Santa Luzia for the broad view over town, river mouth and coast. The tourism overview identifies the sanctuary as a separate destination above town. Check your intended uphill transport and its operation; in poor visibility, spend longer in the centre.
Visiting the sanctuary, accessing a dome viewpoint and looking from the grounds are not the same service. Check admission and access for the version you want instead of inferring free access from a landscape photograph.
Coast or inland on day two?
Caminha fits a northern coastal day and views around the Minho estuary. Choose one beach town along the way rather than testing every access road. Ponte de Lima lies inland and suits old streets, the bridge and a riverside walk. It is a separate alternative, not a coastal stop you automatically pass.
For a beach afternoon near Viana, Cabedelo lies south of the Lima mouth. Allow for the actual river crossing and beach approach. The official beach entry confirms the location; check swimming conditions, wind and supervision for the day. Sunshine in the old town does not mean a windless beach.
Where to stay?
Viana is the versatile base for town, coast and a Ponte de Lima outing. A Caminha stay suits a northern-coast focus. Two nights allow one full Viana day; three make room for a second outing. Do not drive farther north on departure day before returning to Porto airport.
Costs
The bands above are editorial daily allowances per adult for two sharing a room and car. They cover accommodation, food, shared local transport and selected admissions, excluding arrival travel and substantial private tours; actual quotes can differ. A ferry or border crossing into Spain is not a required part of this route; add it only with a checked return and enough time. The northern itinerary presents Minho as an alternative to a mountain stay.
