Alex's take

I would not rent a car merely to leave it in a Porto garage. For Gerês or a rural quinta, the final approach matters more than a cheap headline rate.

Guide details

When should the rental start?

For Porto followed by the Douro, begin with city days without a car. Compare a city office and airport collection including travel there and opening hours. A cheap airport rate can lose its appeal after an extra journey and lost time. Confirm collection, deposit, excess, drivers and child seats against the actual contract.

Road or rail?

Rail can suit a defined outing to Braga, Guimarães or Pinhão. Check the station and final journey to the destination. A hilltop estate or Gerês trailhead is not automatically served by the nearest station.

In the Douro, the N222 is a scenic road involving bends and stops. For Gerês, select a park sector beforehand. Avoid shortcuts that save a few kilometres but create an uncomfortable narrow approach. Stop for photographs only on suitable permitted areas, not beside a blind bend.

Check tolls for your actual route

A northern Portugal itinerary is neither automatically tolled nor entirely toll-free. The infrastructure authority's official notice lists the A24 and the Transmontana and Marão Tunnel sections of the A4 among the roads made toll-free in January 2025. For the A28, the exemption described there applies to Esposende–Antas and Neiva–Darque. Do not extend that to the whole A4 or A28.

Check your actual entry and exit points in the official toll calculator. At rental pickup, confirm how any tolls are billed and whether a separate service charge applies. If you bring a car with foreign plates, choose a payment arrangement valid for those plates; the rental company's arrangement does not apply to your own vehicle.

Parking and return

Ask accommodation about the actual garage entrance, vehicle size, reservation and charge. Parking nearby does not guarantee a space outside the door. Check the car for damage at collection and return and record the agreed condition.

On flight day, refuelling, drop-off and reaching the terminal all come before airport security. For an early departure, move the last night to the Porto area instead of driving back from the mountains. The bands above are editorial daily allowances per adult for two sharing a room and car. They cover accommodation, food, shared local transport and selected admissions, excluding arrival travel and substantial private tours; actual quotes can differ. The budget guide separates rental rates from extras.
