North Portugal Road Trip Itinerary: 5, 7 and 10 Days

5 days: Porto and a short Douro stay

Nights 1–2 Porto, night 3 Pinhão or Régua, night 4 Porto. Day 1 is arrival, day 2 the city. On day 3, collect the car and head to the valley for town, waterfront and one booked experience. Day 4 allows a short valley morning and the drive back. Day 5 is departure and return logistics. Braga and Gerês are not extra stops in this version.

For less packing, stay four nights in Porto and choose a clearly defined Douro rail day trip. A single valley night is an introduction, not a complete wine-country holiday.

7 days: a full Douro day and one cultural city

Nights 1–2 Porto, 3–4 Douro, 5 Braga or Guimarães, 6 Porto. Day 3 is valley arrival; day 4 is a full stay without moving. Day 5 leads to the chosen cultural city, where an old-town walk is enough after arrival. Day 6 allows a fuller visit and return to Porto. Day 7 is departure.

Choose Braga with Bom Jesus or Guimarães with old town and castle area. Seeing both fully does not automatically fit the remaining half-days. Remove this intermediate stay if you want more Porto time.

10 days: Minho or Gerês

Nights 1–2 Porto, 3–4 Douro, 5–6 Braga/Guimarães, 7–8 Viana or Gerês, 9 Porto. Days 3 and 5 remain arrival days with limited additions. On cultural day 6, explore your chosen city properly; a second city on day 5 is at most a shorter introduction.

For the final two regional nights, choose Viana and a full city/coast day, or one Gerês sector and a full nature day. Day 9 returns to Porto; day 10 is departure. The other region replaces this block rather than joining it. Aveiro lies south of Porto and needs an additional full day trip or replaces the cultural block.

Bookings and driving

These examples include arrival and departure and total exactly 4, 6 or 9 nights. Cut activities after a late inbound flight or before an early return. Check car collection, accommodation access and parking, then estate visits. Arrange transport after a tasting before the first glass.
