Guide details
Tavira beside the Gilão
Start at Jardim do Coreto and follow the river to the old bridge. Continue through the lanes towards Igreja da Misericórdia and uphill to the castle area. That climb involves different walking demands from the riverside; shorten the lower river loop if you want to avoid steps. For an interior visit, consider Museu Municipal in Palácio da Galeria if its opening and exhibition suit your day.
The official Tavira walk provides orientation. Allow half a day for town, a break and one selected interior. The bridge often called “Roman” should not be understood as an unchanged Roman structure. You can appreciate Tavira without working through a long church checklist.
Ferry and beach logistics

Check with ferry operator Silnido whether you are leaving from Tavira town or Quatro Águas. These are different departure points with separate timetables. Choose the service for your travel date and confirm the last return before heading to the beach. The operator sells tickets on site. Bring water and sun protection; allow time for reaching the pier, the crossing and the walk to the beach.
Give this outing its own half or full day. The town quay may avoid another car journey; Quatro Águas involves a different approach and is not another name for the same pier. Do not choose accommodation merely for apparent proximity to the word “ferry”. On the island, account for sun exposure, lunch and the return walk. Check beach supervision and bathing conditions locally.
Cacela Velha: village and lagoon view
Cacela Velha suits a short historic village visit with a church, white houses and views over sandbanks and tidal channels. An hour on site with a brief pause is an editorial allowance, excluding a separate beach outing.
A village viewpoint is not a direct walking route to the beach opposite. Visit Portugal identifies Fábrica as a departure point for small boats; confirm an actual service and return if planning a beach day. Do not wade through a tidal channel on the strength of a map or exposed sand. For a brief visit, stay in the village and at permitted viewpoints.
How many nights?
Two nights provide one full day: town on arrival, Ilha de Tavira the next day. Three nights add a second full day for Cacela Velha and more town time. With one night, the town walk is the more dependable focus; an island outing depends heavily on arrival, departure and ferry timings.
Tavira is not a cliff-beach town like Lagos. Staying in town still does not remove every beach transfer. Include return tickets for everyone and any parking or transport to the pier; a private boat price is not comparable to an ordinary ferry fare. Use the base comparison before booking.
Daily budgets are editorial allowances per adult for two sharing a room and transport costs, including food and selected activities, excluding travel to the region. They are not current price quotes.
