Match airports and ferry ports to regions

Cagliari suits the south. Olbia Airport, Olbia ferry port and Golfo Aranci are three distinct northeast arrival points. Alghero Airport and Porto Torres serve the northwest but are also separate places. Start with the regional arrival overview, then save your exact terminal.

The ten-day itinerary fits arrival in Cagliari and departure from Olbia. The fourteen-day version finishing in Alghero can depart there. Check flight dates and one-way rental together. Returning the car to its starting point requires a journey that replaces another activity or the final overnight location.

Compare the complete own-car and rental options

A vehicle ferry can make sense if your car is already on the mainland and you have enough travel time. Compare passengers, vehicle dimensions including attachments, cabin or seat, meals and both sailing directions. Add mainland fuel and any intermediate overnight stop.

For an island rental, check pickup and return hours, charged rental days, one-way fees, deposit, driver requirements and reserved child seats. Ferry permission matters particularly if you later cross to La Maddalena. A vessel booking does not automatically establish rental insurance cover.

Check-in closes before departure time

As a specific example checked on 7 September 2026, Grimaldi’s Livorno–Olbia page requires travellers with vehicles to present no later than two hours before departure. This is not a universal value for every company. Read your route’s instructions and allow for approach traffic and queues before that deadline.

The ship’s stated arrival is not the moment you are already driving along an island road. Unloading, port exit and possibly rental pickup still follow. After a night crossing without proper sleep, I would choose a first stay nearer the arrival port rather than immediately planning a long coastal and sightseeing day.

Confirm old-town access and beach parking

ZTL means a restricted traffic zone. Cagliari’s municipal hotel-access guidance explains that the property must register the vehicle plate before the permitted entry. Confirm the process and luggage drop-off point; a hotel reservation is not general permission to drive through.

For a beach, use the actual permitted parking area rather than the nearest empty roadside. Some destinations also require an access reservation. Paying to park replaces neither that booking nor valid road access. For Cala Goloritzé, the drive ends at a hiking trailhead, not at the cove.

Separate transfers from daily budget bands

For a base change, use current routing with check-out, breaks, shopping and hotel access included. Inland main roads may work better than a winding coastal option. If you deliberately choose the coast for its views, allocate it a distinct sightseeing block.
