Orientation
Where Madeira costs creep up
Madeira can be good value for an Atlantic island, but the total changes quickly when you add car rental, parking, guided hikes, restaurants and a better-located base.
A useful budget separates route costs from personal spending before the first driving day.

Budget Madeira by trip mode: Funchal days, car days, hiking or tour days and slower coast days. One average daily number hides the decisions that actually move money.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Ignoring car-day costs
Rental, fuel, parking and possible insurance choices should be tracked together.
Treating tours as extras
Guided hikes, boat trips and transfers can become a major part of the real trip budget.
Mixing shared and personal spending
Groceries, fuel, parking and group meals become messy if they live only in chat messages.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Essential before booking because route style, car days, tours, food habits and base choice change the total more than island size does.
Skip if
Skip detailed budgeting only if you have a short, prepaid Funchal stay with no shared expenses or car rental.
With kids
Families should budget for apartments, groceries, snacks, pools, parking, fewer late restaurant meals and backup-weather activities.

Budget ranges by travel style
The bands above are editorial planning allowances per adult per calendar day for two people sharing a double room. They include accommodation, food, shared transport and selected activities, excluding flights. They are not live quotes or a promise that every room or rental car fits the range.
An example separates calendar days from paid nights: 7 days, 6 nights, 2 adults. Suppose you choose 120 EUR per room-night, 45 EUR for each of four rental days, 80 EUR total for fuel and parking, 70 EUR daily food for both, and 120 EUR for admissions and transfers. The total is 1,590 EUR, or about 114 EUR per person per calendar day. These are invented arithmetic inputs, not market prices. Replace each line with your actual bookings.
Accommodation differences
Two car-free days in Funchal can save rental and hotel-parking costs. Compare complete quotes, though: a shorter rental is not necessarily proportionally cheaper. Check insurance, excess, deposit, drivers, fuel terms and collection location. A rural stay also needs an allowance for extra dinner drives.
Rental car vs tours
A shared car can suit multi-stop driving days. It does not solve returning from the far end of the full PR1 hike. Compare rental, parking and return-transfer costs with an organized outing, checking whether trail admission and reservation are included.
For a comfort budget, I would pay first for flexible cancellation, a suitable location and confirmed parking. More tours are not a necessary part of spending more.
Shared-cost tracking
Separate personal admissions from shared room, car and grocery costs. If someone skips two driving days, not every car expense necessarily belongs in the same split. Madeira uses the euro; conversion concerns your home currency, not different currencies around the island. In WanderSpend, group actual spending into accommodation, transport, food and activities.
Where to go next
The Madeira itinerary supplies the night count; the road trip guide helps decide how many car days to buy.
For a winter week without a rental car, use seven days and six nights in Funchal as your planning unit. List airport transfers, buses, taxis and booked outings separately before comparing them with a rental quote; the useful comparison is the full cost of the days you actually want to take.
When weighing Madeira or Tenerife in January, price both islands for the same dates and party size. Add airport transfers, local transport and the activities you want to flights and accommodation. That gives you two complete trips to compare rather than isolated starting prices.
