Madeira or Tenerife in January?

I would choose Madeira for a week combining Funchal, green landscapes and selected walks. Southern Tenerife fits better when a coastal promenade, sandy beach and time at the hotel should shape most days. Choosing Tenerife also means choosing between the south and north: Puerto de la Cruz is a different winter base from Costa Adeje.

Madeira is part of Portugal; Tenerife belongs to Spain’s Canary Islands. We compare seven nights from 16 to 23 January 2027. That means eight calendar days and six full days if arrival and departure each take a travel day. For this week, stay on one island and preferably in one property.

What the January climate figures tell you

For the same 1981–2010 reference period, IPMA reports an average January daily high of 19.7°C and 74.1 millimetres of monthly rainfall at Funchal station 522, 58 metres above sea level. These figures support looking first at southern Tenerife for a warmer, drier coastal emphasis. That is an inference from historical station data, not a forecast for your week. Madeira: keep Funchal as your base

Funchal suits travellers happy to walk around town on a cloudy day, move a garden visit and spend longer over lunch. Start by looking in the central lower town. The western Lido area deserves consideration if hotel time and promenades matter more; the old town then becomes a separate journey. Check slopes, steps and the nearest useful bus stop against the exact address.

For a coastal outing, Machico’s bay and imported-sand beach can be enough. There is no need to make it a swimming day. Tenerife: a southern base or the north?

For a coastal week, I would begin with Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje. Choose somewhere with an easy walk to your preferred beach and evening meal. A southern address does not guarantee a level route back: there are hills and large hotel grounds here too.

Las Vistas, near Los Cristianos, has sand, a broad promenade and places to eat nearby. That makes a short beach visit easier than organising an outing every day. I would choose Puerto de la Cruz for its historic centre and northern surroundings. Pick it deliberately when town life matters more than the south’s drier emphasis. Daily journeys across the island sit awkwardly with a relaxed week. Official town overview.

From Tenerife South Airport, TFS, TITSA route 40 connects with Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Check flight time, current services and your hotel stop. Walking: a forest day or volcanic landscapes?

Madeira’s PR11 Vereda dos Balcões from Ribeiro Frio is a manageable selection at three kilometres return. Its height above the coast still matters: forest conditions, visibility and surfaces can differ from Funchal. Arrange the return before setting out. On Tenerife, I would first consider a landscape outing to Las Cañadas in Teide National Park. This is not a casual summit hike. Winter weather can affect roads, trails and the cable car. The PNT10 summit path requires a separate permit through Tenerife ON; a cable car ticket does not include it. Check warnings and actual access close to the day. Fix no more than two weather-dependent outings and keep another day free. It can take a postponed trip or simply remain a coastal day. You do not need to recover every cancelled walk on the final day.

What does the whole week cost?

Compare identical dates, occupancy, luggage and cancellation terms. This neutral example for two adults is not a researched offer on either island. Every amount is an editorial planning assumption to replace with an actual total quote. The purpose is to avoid choosing a winner from room rates alone.

The food allowance covers breakfast, simple grocery shopping and restaurant visits; do not add hotel meals twice if they are included. Check levies, cleaning and existing insurance separately. Rental cars, new equipment and extra outings are excluded.

The useful decision is the difference: EUR 25 more per night costs EUR 175 over the week. If a cheaper remote apartment needs two additional private transfers at an assumed EUR 90 each, EUR 180 has already gone. Shorter everyday journeys can therefore offset the room premium. Give the base more weight with children

Replace the accommodation and transport amounts with quotes for your actual family, then use age-specific excursion prices; do not simply double the two-person budget. Ask about pool heating, opening and the children’s area. With young children, I would look first at southern Tenerife for sand and short promenade walks, and Funchal for town life, gardens and a selected forest day. Is Tenerife warmer than Madeira in January?+

The coastal stations compared here record historical average daily highs of 21.7°C at Tenerife South Airport and 19.7°C in Funchal, both for 1981–2010. These are not island averages or a January 2027 forecast.

Which island is better for beach time?+

For a January week focused on the coast, I would check Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje first. Promenades and sandy beaches can fit easily into the day. Swimming still depends on the sea, weather and local access instructions.

Can I spend seven nights without renting a car?+

Yes, with a suitable base and a limited number of outings. Funchal and Tenerife’s southern coastal towns are the options compared here. Walking routes need their own outward and return transport; a local bus is not automatically a hiking shuttle.

Which island is cheaper?+

Compare complete quotes for the same people and dates. Our neutral example totals EUR 2,560 for two adults before a reserve, but it is neither a destination price nor a market average.

Is Teide a spontaneous family outing?+

A landscape visit to the national park is different from a summit hike. Winter conditions, roads and transport must suit. The PNT10 summit path requires its own permit; a cable car ticket does not replace it.

Should I combine both islands in one week?+

I would choose one island for seven nights. Eight calendar days give six full days between arrival and departure in this plan. Switching islands takes time for transfers, airports and checking in again.
