Orientation
Why Madeira can work for families
Madeira gives families variety without huge island distances: Funchal, gardens, viewpoints, short walks, natural pools and dramatic coast.
It also has steep paths, cliffs, mountain roads and weather changes. The family version needs restraint.

With kids, I would rather repeat a comfortable base than move hotels to save a few minutes of driving. Madeira rewards calm logistics.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Planning adult hikes for child energy
Levadas and cliffs can be more exposed and tiring than they look in photos.
Combining pool days with long drives
Natural pools work better when the route is simple and sea conditions are checked.
Forgetting groceries and snacks
Family budget and mood improve when snacks, water and simple meals are planned before route days.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it with kids if you keep drives realistic, avoid exposed hikes and choose safe nature stops over constant viewpoint chasing.
Skip if
Skip a packed island loop with children if your family needs flat beaches, predictable weather or very short transfers every day.
With kids
Choose Funchal plus selective car days, keep snacks and groceries visible, and treat cliffs, levadas and natural pools with extra caution.

Guide details
Realistic driving days
Five calendar days leave three full days after arrival and departure. Stay four nights in Funchal for a city day, a short nature outing and a coastal day. Seven days and six nights add two outing days; keep one before the return flight available as a weather alternative. No long hike needs to squeeze into departure day.
Funchal with kids
Start with the waterfront and old-town streets, using breaks instead of packing the market, Monte and several gardens into one day. Monte Palace has steep paths and is not a continuously level stroller park. With younger children, choose one garden and check return transport and toilets beforehand. A kitchen and confirmed parking can simplify everyday errands.
Short nature outing or swimming day?
For children used to walking, PR11 Balcões can be an introduction: 3 km there and back, subject to trail status and conditions. Still consider narrow sections and how well children can concentrate. In the IFCN system, fee-exempt children also need reservations for the covered trails.
Machico is an alternative for a shorter eastern beach-and-town outing. Give Porto Moniz a full north-west day and check local bathing instructions. The managed complex with a children's pool differs from the free-access Cachalote pools. A closure is no reason to scramble over rocks looking for another place to swim.
What to skip
The full PR1 crossing, long tunnel levadas and multiple cliff stops are not essential family experiences. For ten days, five nights in Funchal, three in Calheta and a final night in Funchal can suit a real west-coast focus. Otherwise, one accommodation can work for a longer trip too.
Budget and snacks
The family budget bands are rough group allowances for two adults and two children sharing an apartment, including food, car and selected admissions, excluding flights. Ages, room needs and child seats change them substantially; they are not current family packages. Compare an apartment's total including cleaning with the hotel total, adding food only where it is not already included.
Where to go next
The Porto Moniz guide distinguishes the pool sites; the Madeira itinerary provides the fuller adult route.
