Orientation

Why driving Madeira is rewarding but demanding

Madeira is built for viewpoints, coastal detours and mountain changes. A car gives freedom, but it also adds steep gradients, tunnels, tight parking and driver fatigue.

The best road trip days have one clear theme instead of every possible stop.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

Compare the full rental cost, including hotel parking, with hiring only for your driving days. If you explore Funchal on foot, collecting the car for your first coastal outing may make more sense.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Underestimating steep roads

Map distance is not the same as driver effort on Madeira.

Adding every viewpoint to one day

Viewpoint fatigue is real; choose the ones that fit the route.

Renting a car for Funchal city time

The car is most useful outside the city, not while you pay or search for parking.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Worth it for flexible viewpoints and coastal villages, but only if the driver is comfortable with steep roads, tunnels and parking decisions.

Skip if

Skip renting for every day if you plan mostly Funchal, guided hikes or do not enjoy narrow, steep roads.

With kids

Families should keep drives short, choose one route theme per day and avoid stacking mountain roads after long walks.

Low

80-140 EUR/day

Guide details

Steep roads and tunnels

Distinguish the main tunnel routes from the last few kilometres to your accommodation or trailhead. Those local approaches can be steep and narrow. Check the address before booking and ask about the entrance: a cheap parking space is less useful if you dislike manoeuvring into it every day. A shorter sat-nav shortcut is not necessarily a more comfortable drive.

East, west and north route logic

North-west: Travel via São Vicente and Seixal to Porto Moniz. Make the pools the main stop, with longer time in one of the villages if desired. Santana does not follow this westbound route; give the north-east a separate outing.

South-west: Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão and Ponta do Sol form a shorter coastal day. Leave Porto Moniz out if you want lunch in the fishing village or a longer break by the sea.

East: Combine Machico with the Ponta de São Lourenço area. Decide whether you want a roadside view or the PR8 hike. Visit Madeira describes 4 km plus 4 km back, which makes it more than a brief parking stop.

Mountains: Give Pico do Arieiro its own outing with a visibility check. A full PR1 crossing needs an arranged return transfer; your car remains at the start.

Parking and rental car notes

Compare rental days with transfer quotes, adding hotel parking, insurance and fuel. At collection, check existing damage, excess, fuel policy and the agreed return location. Allow time for refuelling, drop-off and reaching the terminal on departure day; do not put a mountain route before the flight.

Funchal suits selective rental days. On a nine-night trip, two nights in Porto Moniz can divide the north-west outing; on a week-long trip, one base saves a move. Budget bands are per adult per day for two sharing a room and car, including accommodation and food, excluding flights and substantial private tours.

Save route notes

Keep the actual accommodation approach, permitted parking and return address alongside expenses in WanderSpend. A straight line on the overview map is not a navigable road.
