Orientation
Choose one region deliberately
Choose one region for seven days: Bergen with a fjord base, or Lofoten with two island bases and a final Evenes night. Two weeks allow a selective combination with a dedicated flight day.
I would choose Lofoten when Reine, the coast and Arctic light are the reason for travelling. For Bergen, rail and a fjord outing, choose the western route; neither is universally cheaper.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Count travel days as full island days
The combined version provides three full Lofoten days, not five or six.
Treat arrival points as interchangeable
Evenes is east and Moskenes west; vehicle and return arrangements must fit.
Travel planning answers
Choosing the region
How many nights make a week?+
Bergen 2, Flåm/Aurland 3, Bergen 1. Svolvær/Henningsvær 2, Reine/Hamnøy 3, Evenes 1.
Which region is cheaper?+
Compare flights including bags, actual car station and return, room occupancy, ferries and chosen activities for the same dates. Lofoten is not automatically dearer and Bergen is not automatically cheaper. A Moskenes ferry can require different vehicle arrangements from Evenes.
How much Lofoten time remains in two weeks?+
One full eastern and two full western days; four other northern travel days include flight, base change, airport return and departure.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Choose one region for seven days: Bergen with a fjord base, or Lofoten with two island bases and a final Evenes night. Two weeks allow a selective combination with a dedicated flight day.
Skip if
Do not combine both within one week. Flying north is a travel day with car return and a new arrival.
With kids
With young children, choose one region and position the final night for the actual airport. Long beach days need suitable conditions, not just attractive pictures.

Guide details
Fjord region or Arctic islands
Western Norway connects Bergen with valleys, railways and fjord boats. For a week, Bergen plus Flåm or Aurland is enough without Geiranger adding another major transfer. Lofoten focuses on coastal settlements, beaches and mountains but still needs dedicated arrival and return days. The official scenic route covers 230 kilometres including detours between Å and Raftsundet; that is not total driving from the airport.
Seven days and six nights in the fjords
Bergen nights 1–2 leave day 2 as a full city day. Flåm/Aurland nights 3–5 create two full days for boat and railway or a quieter selection. Day 6 returns to Bergen for night 6; day 7 is departure. A car-free trip works along this corridor when you book actual rail, bus and boat connections including the return. It does not imply unrestricted connections to further fjord towns.
Seven days and six nights on Lofoten
Arriving and departing through Evenes: nights 1–2 Svolvær or Henningsvær, nights 3–5 Reine or Hamnøy, night 6 around Evenes. Day 2 stays in the east; days 4–5 in the west. Day 3 changes bases with one selected stop, and day 6 is the longer airport return. The two full western days allow, for example, Reine/Å and a weather-dependent beach day, not a promised mountain hike in any conditions.
If day 1’s flight lands late, replace the first eastern night with Evenes and shorten the island programme. Do not move the long onward drive into an exhausted night. Leknes is an alternative base with a different location and services, not interchangeable with Reine.
Bodø means a different travel plan
The car ferry runs between Bodø and Moskenes; sailings via Værøy or Røst are different connections. Check the direct sailing, vehicle capacity and check-in deadline with the operator. The timetable valid on 7 September 2026 already distinguishes summer and winter; a general three-to-four-hour claim is insufficient for booking.
Moskenes is in the western islands. Arriving there can reverse the base sequence; it cannot replace Evenes without new car and return arrangements. Regional flights have their own destination airports and vehicle stations too.
Fourteen days include a real flight day
Nights 1–6 follow the southern plan: Bergen 2, Flåm/Aurland 3, Bergen 1. Day 7 is the flight to Evenes with night 7 near the airport; check an actual suitable connection before booking any hotels. Nights 8–9 stay in the east, nights 10–12 in the west, and night 13 near Evenes again. Day 14 is departure.
This combination provides one full eastern day and two full western days on Lofoten, not five or six full island days. Extend the trip or choose one region for more time. Geiranger, Hardanger and the Atlantic Road are not additional parts of this plan.
Compare costs on the same basis
Compare flights including bags, actual car station and return, room occupancy, ferries and chosen activities for the same dates. Lofoten is not automatically dearer and Bergen is not automatically cheaper. A Moskenes ferry can require different vehicle arrangements from Evenes.
Rough EUR budget bands are per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, with meals and fuel. Flights, tolls, ferries and special activities are additional. Winter changes daylight, roads and boat conditions; choose a separate, shorter daily programme instead of an unchanged summer circuit.
For Arctic winter photography with one city base, consider a separate five-day Tromsø photography trip. It combines local coastal scenes, a Kvaløya excursion and weather flexibility without adding Lofoten or the western fjords to a short itinerary.
Save the plan
Use WanderSpend to keep route days, ferry times, bookings, documents, notes and shared expenses in one private trip space. More importantly, save a weather-flex version of each day so a closed mountain road or windy boat day does not unravel the route.
