How to use this guide

Seven days form a Bergen loop. Ten and fourteen days finish in Ålesund; arrival, departure and 6, 9 or 13 nights are included. Lofoten and the Atlantic Road are excluded.

I would finish the ten-day route in Ålesund. A Bergen return needs its own travel days, so remove other nights accordingly or extend the trip.

Budget bands: rough EUR estimates per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, with meals and fuel. Price flights, tolls, ferries and booked activities separately; these are not available offers.

Alex's Take

I would finish the ten-day route in Ålesund. A Bergen return needs its own travel days, so remove other nights accordingly or extend the trip.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Extend beyond the intended travel block

Without a suitable one-way rental and onward travel from Ålesund, choose the southern Bergen loop. An Oslo departure does not automatically fit this route.

Overlook the specific access arrangements

The longer plan includes transfer stages. For shorter journeys, stay with Bergen and Flåm and more nights at each base.

Guide details

Seven days from and back to Bergen

Nights 1–2 are in Bergen. Day 2 is a full city day; day 3 travels via Voss to Flåm or Aurland for nights 3–5. Day 4 can focus on Nærøyfjord with a booked return bus, and day 5 on the railway or a free day. Return to Bergen on day 6 for night 6, and depart on day 7. Omit Hardanger, Geiranger and Trollstigen. Retracing the same corridor brings a straightforward return and more time at the fjord base.

Ten days from Bergen to Ålesund

Nights 1–2 Bergen, nights 3–4 Flåm/Aurland: there is one full fjord day, so choose boat or railway as the priority. Day 5 reaches Sogndal for night 5. Check the connection via Lærdal and the necessary fjord crossing; a high road is optional, not the required transfer.

Day 6 is the longer northern stage through the Stryn/Hellesylt area to Geiranger, for example with a suitable booked Hellesylt–Geiranger car ferry. Do not add a major hike to this transfer. Geiranger nights 6–7 provide day 7 as a full fjord day. Day 8 follows the northern approach actually open and Eidsdal–Linge towards Ålesund. Nights 8–9 stay there; day 9 is city time and day 10 departure. These nine nights contain no return to Bergen.

Fourteen days with Hardanger and Åndalsnes

Nights 1–2 Bergen, nights 3–4 Eidfjord: day 3 transfers, while day 4 is a full Hardangerfjord day with a currently open Vøringsfossen viewpoint area or another suitable outing. The scenic-roads authority distinguishes the generally year-round road 7 from winter closures of the waterfall paths.

Nights 5–7 are in Flåm/Aurland, leaving two full days for boat and railway. Night 8 is Sogndal, nights 9–10 Geiranger with one full fjord day. Nights 11–12 stay in Åndalsnes; day 12 is for a local outing or Trollstigen only when access is confirmed. Day 13 reaches Ålesund for night 13; day 14 is departure. Omit the Atlantic Road.

When the return must be Bergen

Compare flights and confirmed car return in Ålesund before booking accommodation. If the journey must finish in Bergen, plan a separate return transfer with a suitable intermediate night, for example around Førde, and a final Bergen night before an early flight. These nights replace other regional stays or extend the trip. They are not a free addition on departure day.

After a pass closure, recheck the entire connection to the next accommodation. A reachable viewpoint does not establish an open through-route. Overview-map lines are not current road navigation.

Save the plan

WanderSpend helps keep route days, fjord stops, bookings, documents, notes, shared expenses and offline details in one private trip space before the signal gets weak or the weather changes the day.
