How to use this guide
A ten-day calculation for two adults separates nine room nights from eight billed rental days. Flights and booked outings remain separate items.
I would record each ferry with both terminals and the actual vehicle fare. A sightseeing boat does not replace a required car crossing in the budget.
Budget bands: rough EUR estimates per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, with meals and fuel. Price flights, tolls, ferries and booked activities separately; these are not available offers.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Extend beyond the intended travel block
Do not compare daily packages without party size, room occupancy, rental duration and included services.
Overlook the specific access arrangements
Use the specific family room and actual child fares. Do not simply divide a two-adult example by four.

An example with clear units
Assumed calculation inputs for two adults, ten days and nine nights: nine room nights at NOK 1,800 make NOK 16,200. Eight billed rental days at NOK 1,000 make NOK 8,000; ten days of food for two at NOK 900 make NOK 9,000. Add assumed fuel of NOK 2,000 and NOK 2,500 for tolls, parking and car ferries. Total: NOK 37,700 for two, NOK 18,850 per person or NOK 1,885 per person per travel day. Flights, one-way rental fees and booked outings remain additional.
Every unit price is an assumption, not a checked offer. Eight rental days only fit actual pickup/return times; arriving without a car is a deliberate plan, not an automatically free rental day.
Separate car ferries and sightseeing boats
On Geiranger–Hellesylt, Fjord1 accepts foot passengers and vehicles; fare and capacity depend on the selected vehicle and passenger count. Record this crossing where it actually connects your route. Flåm–Gudvangen as a passenger outing with a return bus has a separate price. One boat entry does not cover both products interchangeably.
Ask the rental supplier how road tolls and ferry charges are passed on, including administration fees. AutoPASS explains Norway’s toll system; the specific rental agreement additionally determines your billing arrangements.
Assess room location and self-catering
An apartment can be worthwhile when you prepare several meals there. Check kitchen, linen, cleaning and breakfast in the total price. A cheap night on the opposite shore may trigger another ferry or a long return drive. Compare the combined accommodation and actual journey total.
For an open Bergen–Ålesund route, price the confirmed return location and any one-way fee. A loop might avoid that fee but requires extra nights, fuel and time. Neither option is universally cheaper without specific quotes.
Reconcile NOK receipts and shared spending
Record the original NOK amount and the currency actually charged to the card. EUR bands in the quick facts are rough estimates per person per day, not a promised exchange-rate conversion. Accommodation, meals and a shared car with fuel are the basis; flights, tours and route-specific toll/ferry costs are additional.
Count deposits once. A later balance payment is the balance, not a second full room price. Keep shared spending separate from its allocation between travellers so a reimbursement between friends does not increase the trip total again.
Save the plan
WanderSpend helps keep route days, fjord stops, bookings, documents, notes, shared expenses and offline details in one private trip space before the signal gets weak or the weather changes the day.
