Driving the Croatia Coast Guide

A rental car is useful for a continuous mainland section: for example Zadar, Šibenik and Krka before your Split stay. For Split, a walkable island base and Dubrovnik, the same rental can instead add parking and ferry costs.

Plan the actual pickup and return

One example is three nights in Šibenik with a city day and Krka, followed by driving to Split and returning the car. Confirm whether the return office is actually near the port: “Split” can also mean the airport outside the city. An airport return followed by travelling to a passenger ferry requires separate time and money.

For a simple Split–Dubrovnik land journey, compare a bus or transfer with a rental day and one-way fee. The car becomes more useful if you include Ston or Pelješac along the way. A longer coastal stop still needs to fit before the rental office closes.

Pelješac Bridge or Neum

Using Pelješac Bridge and its approach roads allows the journey towards Dubrovnik to remain within Croatia; the government records its 2022 opening. The older coastal route through Neum enters Bosnia and Herzegovina. Check the route your navigation selects instead of assuming a border crossing is unavoidable.

If you deliberately visit Neum, Mostar or Montenegro, check entry documents, vehicle permission and insurance cover for the relevant country beforehand. Permission to drive within Croatia is not blanket rental-company approval for neighbouring countries.

Motorway or coastal road

A motorway is generally the time-saving choice for longer sections; the coastal road suits deliberate stops. Do not count on pulling onto the shoulder for photographs. Use permitted stopping places and save the sea view for a safe halt.

Check current wind restrictions, closures and traffic with HAK. For tolled sections, use the HAC tariff for your route and vehicle class. A report that a bridge is open on another day does not replace checking before your journey.

Parking and islands

In Split and Dubrovnik, identify the actual parking space and luggage route. Ask the accommodation to explain access and any permitted unloading; an old-town room does not automatically provide vehicle access. Consider rental price, parking charges and time together.

For an island stay with a car, check the ferry line, vehicle dimensions and rental conditions. Split–Stari Grad and Split–Supetar use different booking arrangements, explained in the ferry guide. If you plan several passenger catamarans, returning the car before the island section is often simpler.
