Editorial recommendation

Choose exact ports and travel dates before stays. A car ferry and a passenger catamaran solve different journeys.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Worth it because ferry logic is the difference between a graceful island trip and a route full of awkward waiting.

Skip if

Skip island hopping if you cannot add buffers and would be stressed by schedule changes or port transfers.

With kids

Favor direct ferries, fewer moves, morning departures and accommodation close to the right port.

Guide details

Plan an island crossing port to port, with dates, passenger numbers and the vehicle decision. “Split to Hvar” can mean a car ferry to Stari Grad or a passenger vessel to Hvar Town. Those are different arrivals and accommodation transfers.

Three concrete port pairs

  • Split–Stari Grad, Hvar: car ferry, followed by a separate transfer to Hvar Town or your accommodation. The Jadrolinija route page states that a ticket on this line also reserves a place on the selected departure. Check vehicle details and the required arrival time.
  • Split–Supetar, Brač: car ferry to the north coast. Bol and Zlatni rat are on another side of the island. The route page describes ticket validity on other departures of the same line that day; do not treat this as a guaranteed vehicle reservation for any desired departure.
  • Orebić–Dominče, Korčula: car ferry from Pelješac. Dominče is a separate port outside Korčula’s old town; an island name on the ticket does not solve the onward journey.

Moving between islands without a car

Passenger catamarans can connect Split, Hvar Town, Korčula Town and Dubrovnik. Check the actual leg on your travel date with Krilo or the relevant operator. A route name listing several islands guarantees neither your preferred direction nor a useful day trip. An excursion also needs a suitable return sailing that day.

One workable outline is three nights in Split, three on one island and three in Dubrovnik, provided direct passenger services operate on both transfer dates. If the Dubrovnik connection does not work, compare returning to Split and making a separate mainland transfer, or keep a Split round trip. Resolve this before reaching the port.

Tickets, vehicles and luggage

On car ferries, price passengers and the vehicle according to the offered fare; a vehicle ticket does not automatically include everyone travelling. Height, length, trailers, roof equipment and bicycles can matter. Your rental agreement must cover the planned ferry use. A catamaran ticket for you is not a booking for the car.

Check luggage rules, child categories, cancellation and check-in time for the specific product. A digital booking alone does not tell you whether a particular berth, ticket desk or earlier queueing time is required.

Buffer before flying

As an editorial minimum, spend the final night on the mainland at the appropriate departure city; allow more for a particularly important connection or an adverse forecast. This still cannot eliminate disruption risk. Keep funds for an extra night and an alternative land connection. Make the island choice before committing to accommodation.

Budget bands are per adult for two sharing a room, including food, local transport and selected admissions, excluding arrival travel. They are editorial allowances; price ferries, rental cars and major activities for the actual itinerary.
