Editorial recommendation

Choose one base for three nights: the port, beach approach and evening setting matter more than an island label.

Guide details

For a short island stay, the base town matters more than the island’s reputation. Three nights mean two full days, enough for a town and a beach day. Two islands require an additional transfer day and a connection that actually works.

Hvar: town or Stari Grad

Hvar Town suits harbour evenings, the square around St Stephen’s Cathedral and a separate climb to Fortica. For nightlife, check proximity to bars; for sleep, do not automatically choose the busy harbourfront. A room above the town can mean numerous steps.

Stari Grad provides a different base around its harbour inlet and old-town lanes. It is closer to the car ferry port of the same name, though that terminal is still outside the town centre. The Hvar tourist board identifies this as the main car ferry access, with a separate journey to Hvar Town. For a beach outside your base, such as Dubovica, check the final walking approach as well as return transport; “cove” does not imply stroller-friendly access.

Brač: Supetar or Bol

Supetar is the straightforward choice when arriving by car ferry from Split and wanting the town nearby. Bol fits when Zlatni rat is the main attraction. The Bol tourist board places the beach about two kilometres from the centre. Count that distance both ways, including on a car-free stay.

The famous spit is a pebble beach, not soft sand; wind and currents change the conditions. With children, choose a suitable section on site. A day trip arriving in Supetar also requires crossing the island to Bol and returning; staying overnight in Bol can be the better solution.

Korčula: old town or beach base

Korčula Town works for narrow lanes, St Mark’s Cathedral and waterfront evenings. Lumbarda is an alternative when beach time and wine villages matter more; arrange a non-drinking driver or transfer for tastings. Vela Luka is at the other end of the island. Arriving there by ferry is not arriving beside Korčula’s old town.

With a car, consider Orebić–Dominče; on foot, seasonal catamarans may serve your chosen town. Check the full port name and final journey to accommodation for every booking.

Choosing one island

For seven days from Split, choose three island nights in Supetar/Bol or Hvar Town/Stari Grad and return to the mainland before flying. On a longer onward journey to Dubrovnik, Korčula can fit if the ferry sequence works on your dates. A boat to smaller neighbouring islands remains a weather-dependent excursion replacing a beach day; it does not require another hotel move.

Budget bands are per adult for two sharing a room, including food, local transport and selected admissions, excluding arrival travel. They are editorial allowances; price ferries, rental cars and major activities for the actual itinerary.
