Orientation

Not every travel day needs a rental car

Renfe’s Avant network links the main cultural cities. Rail avoids old-city parking but still needs station-to-hotel travel.

For Ronda and Setenil the car provides more freedom. Granada pickup and Málaga return can fit if one-way fees and station hours are included.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

I would first remove unused car days in Seville, then compare the whole quote to decide whether rail plus a one-way rental saves money.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Treating navigation as permission to enter

Hotel access and environmental zones are separate checks. Arrange plate registration or permission through the hotel where required.

Estimating charged days by the calendar

Pickup and return times determine the charged 24-hour periods.

Travel planning answers

Questions about car and rail

Is every old city an environmental zone?+

No. ZBE rules, pedestrian areas and local access controls differ. Check each hotel address separately.

Is AP-7 free?+

Not universally. Autopista del Sol charges by section and season; compare A-7 using actual traffic and journey time.

What changed for rental cars in 2026?+

Spanish-registered vehicles require a connected V16 breakdown beacon from 1 January 2026. Ask to see it at pickup; DGT treats foreign-registered vehicles in international circulation separately.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

For fewer unused rental days and a confirmed hotel approach rather than navigation into restricted old-city streets.

Skip if

For a Seville–Córdoba city trip focus on rail and local travel; a car is optional.

With kids

Confirm child-seat suitability by age/height and rental terms. Give winding Ronda approaches daylight, breaks and a reachable parking destination.

Compare rail between the cities

Renfe lists Avant links between Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga. Timetables changed in July 2026, so do not rely on an old departure time. Compare tickets for your dates including station transfers and the luggage walk.

How it fits the route

If the trip begins with several nights in Seville, compare taking trains for the city section and collecting a car when you leave for the villages. Returning it before a final city-only stay can also be worth considering. Put station transfers and any one-way fee into that comparison; fewer rental days only help if the handover fits your route.

For village stops, I would start with a compact car that still holds all your luggage. Before booking an old-town stay, ask where you can actually park, how to reach the accommodation and how far you will need to carry bags. Confirm the pickup station's opening hours against your arrival time, especially if you are collecting after a train journey.

In the ten-day route, collect in Granada and return in Málaga. Fewer rental days save money only when rail, handover travel and one-way fees work out cheaper together.

Car rental

Compare a car for the village and coast section

Once you know which days need a car, compare those rental dates. Match the vehicle to your luggage and parking plans, then check the total price, deposit and excess terms.

On the Spain search page, enter your actual pickup and return towns, such as Seville or Málaga, and the dates for the driving section. Check any one-way fee.

Old-city access, tolls and mountain roads

Granada’s hotel approach page provides routes with access controls. Ask the hotel to confirm the approach and any required plate authorization; emissions eligibility does not grant access to bus lanes or restricted old-city streets. Seville’s ZBE concerns Cartuja north/south; Málaga and Granada have their own systems. Do not assume one vehicle category is cleared for every city.

AP-7 tariffs distinguish Málaga–Estepona from Estepona–Guadiaro and vary by season. Allow daylight and breaks for winding roads toward Ronda and check DGT incidents before departure. A blanket mountain-road speed is not a reliable journey estimate.

Pickup and total cost

For a Spanish-registered rental, ask to see the connected V16 required from January 2026; DGT explains the distinction for foreign vehicles. Check fuel policy, deposit, excess and return address in the contract too.

Displayed budget bands are overall travel budgets per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, not rental quotes. The budget model assumes 165 EUR rental, 100 EUR one-way fee, 90 EUR fuel and 75 EUR parking: 430 EUR for the group before rail. These are assumptions; actual final quotes decide.
