With kids, I would choose comfort over novelty: fewer bases, easier beach access and one planned activity every few days instead of a new highlight every morning.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Choosing tiny cliff beaches every day
Stairs, heat and parking can make scenic coves harder than expected.
Skipping rest time
The Algarve is easier when every day is not a new transfer plus a new activity.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it for families if the route prioritizes access, base simplicity and flexible beach days over famous cliffs.
Skip if
Skip steep or exposed cliff beaches with small kids when heat, wind or parking makes the day harder.
With kids
Choose one or two bases, use apartments when helpful and keep Benagil, cliff walks and ferry days separate from long drives.

Guide details
Five days with four nights
One base is enough for a short family trip: Lagos for town and the western coast, or Tavira for town and an island beach. Two hotel changes would consume a large share of the three full days available in a five-day trip. First check the route from the accommodation to food, groceries and a genuinely suitable beach entrance.
- Day 1: arrive, buy supplies and explore briefly; first night.
- Day 2: one beach with suitable conditions, then a midday break at the accommodation; second night.
- Day 3: one activity, such as a manageable boat outing within age requirements or an island beach day from Tavira; third night.
- Day 4: weather buffer and a repeat of your favourite beach, or town time; fourth night.
- Day 5: pack and depart. An early flight does not create another holiday day.
With seven days and six nights, you can simply extend the same base. An east-west move makes sense when both areas serve a concrete purpose; three nights in each base give two full days in each and a transfer day.
Beaches and cliffs with young children
Check the whole approach, including steps and the return climb. Camilo or Marinha require more carrying than a carefully chosen flatter entrance; the name Falésia alone does not establish step-free access. An island beach does not reduce the effort to zero: reaching the pier, waiting, crossing and walking over sand remain part of the outing.
The AMN beach advice calls for attention beside the water and distance from unstable cliffs. Shade beneath a rock wall is not a suitable place to settle. Keep children on marked upper paths and behind barriers; Seven Hanging Valleys is not a pushchair promenade.
The bathing flags make specific distinctions: yellow prohibits swimming, red prohibits entering the water, and the chequered flag means temporarily no supervision. Green allows bathing and swimming but does not replace supervision of young children. Follow lifeguard instructions and marked bathing areas as well. A boat outing needs suitable lifejackets and confirmed age requirements; Benagil is not a freely accessible cave beach.
Apartment or hotel?
An apartment suits you when a kitchen, separate sleeping space and an actually available washing machine ease the day. Check stairs, balconies, pool access and cleaning charges rather than inferring facilities from the accommodation category. A hotel may simplify breakfast and daily meals; confirm family-room occupancy, meal times and possible extras. A pool does not remove the need for supervision.
When wind or rain cancels the beach
In Faro, Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve offers a concrete indoor option with exhibitions and aquariums. Check opening, the midday break and any separately booked programme. From Lagos this is not a short walk: for a passing shower, games at the accommodation and a later town stroll may make a better day. In wind, a brief sheltered town visit can work better than forcing a boat outing.
The displayed budget bands refer to adults sharing a room, not a whole family. For four people, a purely illustrative day could be EUR 140 accommodation + EUR 50 transport + EUR 90 food + EUR 30 activities = EUR 310, excluding travel to the region. Replace these assumptions with your occupancy and quotes; child prices vary by age. The budget guide explains the calculation and the beach guide compares access.
