Orientation
How to use this guide
Trollstigen is a separate road outing from Åndalsnes or Valldal, not a guaranteed connection to Geiranger. Check the road and viewpoint platform separately.
I would choose the next accommodation so it remains reachable by an alternative. A photograph of the hairpins does not establish whether the road is open that day.
Budget bands: rough EUR estimates per person per day for two adults sharing a room and car, with meals and fuel. Price flights, tolls, ferries and booked activities separately; these are not available offers.

I would choose the next accommodation so it remains reachable by an alternative. A photograph of the hairpins does not establish whether the road is open that day.

Itinerary
Suggested itinerary
One outing day from a regional base, subject to current road status
Trollstigen is a separate road outing from Åndalsnes or Valldal, not a guaranteed connection to Geiranger. Check the road and viewpoint platform separately.
- 1Check the specific section with Vegvesen before departure, not just the scenic route overview.
- 2When open, use the chosen car park and viewpoint path, allowing for slow driving.
- 3When closed, choose a local outing or the confirmed alternative to the next accommodation.
Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Extend beyond the intended travel block
Omit the through-drive during closure or unsuitable weather. A detour to an open platform only makes sense with the full approach checked.
Overlook the specific access arrangements
Treat the chosen viewpoint as a short outing with suitable clothing and firm railing boundaries. A mountain hike is not an automatic addition.

Guide details
Distinguish the Trollstigen road and plateau
The famous hairpin section lies between the Åndalsnes area and the high point towards Valldal. Closure of the bends need not affect the same approach as a plateau platform. Conversely, an older notice about open viewpoints does not establish today’s through-traffic.
When checked on 7 September 2026, the official website contains both 2026 seasonal information and a separate closure page without an unambiguous date. This guide therefore gives no enduring open/closed declaration. Use Vegvesen’s current section-specific traffic notice immediately before driving.
Choose the alternative before booking the hotel
If the through-route is unavailable, check the connection from Åndalsnes along E136 towards Sjøholt and onwards to Valldal/Linge. This is a separate detour with a new driving allowance, not a quick deviation. Geiranger then adds Eidsdal–Linge and the northern approach actually open.
Decide first whether you really need to reach accommodation beyond the closed section. With two Åndalsnes nights, you can omit the road outing and stay locally instead. Never decide for yourself to bypass a section closed to vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians.
Avoid stacking several scenic routes
Geiranger–Trollstigen includes more than the famous hairpin view and contains a ferry crossing. The Atlantic Road belongs to another northern stage, not an extra on a complete Geiranger day. Farther south, Aurlandsfjellet is a different choice: Stegastein and the full high crossing again need separate seasonal checks.
One deliberately selected panoramic day is enough for a first trip. Other roads should get you to the next base with time for meals, weather and waiting.
