Orientation

Plan your stay

Poetto is the city-beach option during a Cagliari stay. Villasimius lies southeast and suits Simius or Porto Giunco; Chia lies on the other side of the south and suits Su Giudeu and the dune coast.

Three nights can combine one Cagliari night with two at exactly one beach base. A fourth night adds another full day there instead of repeated drives across the south.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

After a late flight I would stay in Cagliari. Then choose Villasimius for an onward east-coast route, or Chia for a stay deliberately spent in the southwest.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Combining Chia and Villasimius every day

They lie on opposite sides of Cagliari. Choose one base rather than repeated cross-south drives.

Confusing the beach with the viewpoint tower

Porto Giunco’s tower trail is an extra hillside walk, not the necessary beach access.

Assuming May guarantees swimming conditions

Sunshine does not establish a comfortable sea temperature for you. A spring visit benefits from town and excursion alternatives.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

Which beach fits a Cagliari stay?+

Poetto is the urban beach between Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena. Choose a specific section to suit your accommodation and approach.

Simius or Porto Giunco?+

Simius fits a Villasimius stay; Porto Giunco adds a lagoon setting. Compare actual hotel and parking walks rather than rushing both into a short day.

Which specific Chia beach should I consider?+

Su Giudeu is a large sandy option with dunes. Check wind, waves and permitted access on your date.

Are loungers and toilets always available?+

No. Facilities and opening depend on the beach section and season. Confirm any essential service in advance.

How many nights?+

Three nights means Cagliari1 plus Villasimius2 or Chia2. Four nights give the selected beach base another day.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

For a Cagliari arrival with a clear choice between city beach, southeast and southwest.

Skip if

You land in Olbia and have only a week for the northeast and east coast.

With kids

Poetto offers a city-beach option. For Porto Giunco and Su Giudeu, check the specific parking approach, seasonal toilets and shade. Keep children off the dunes.

Guide details

Use Poetto during a Cagliari stay

Poetto serves the city-beach plans of Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena. It works for combining an evening in town with swimming without moving to another base immediately after arrival. Choose a particular section: a long beach means different walks to bus stops, parking and facilities.

After a late landing I would keep the first evening in Cagliari. The next morning then needs neither an early coastal transfer nor a fixed boat booking. Two Cagliari nights make sense if you want a full day for town and Poetto; count that extra night in the overall itinerary.

Villasimius: Simius or Porto Giunco

Simius and Porto Giunco are specific beach choices for a Villasimius-area base. Check whether your property is in town or actually near your chosen shore. Walking to dinner and having a short morning beach approach are not features every property combines.

Porto Giunco lies between the sea and a lagoon landscape. The headland tower involves an additional hillside walk; you do not have to climb it for a beach visit. Save the beach parking and tower destination separately. With small children, focus first on the permitted, manageable approach to your beach section rather than the tower panorama.

Give Su Giudeu a whole Chia day

Su Giudeu has a long sandy setting with dunes and an offshore rock. Use permitted paths, keep off the dunes and bring shade if you have no confirmed lounger arrangement. Tourism descriptions of shallow water do not replace checking wind, waves and the actual water entry.

Chia is a different base from Villasimius. During a southwest stay, Nora near Pula can be a separate cultural stop on the outward or return journey. Do not squeeze Nora, several Chia beaches and a further drive to Villasimius into one afternoon. Treat the onward east-coast journey as a transfer.

Three nights or an extra beach day

A short version uses day 1 in Cagliari, day 2 to move to the chosen beach base, day 3 there and day 4 to continue. That is Cagliari1 plus Villasimius2 or Chia2. A fourth night at the same beach base adds another full day. For a beach-focused visit with early arrival, all three nights can be there instead; Cagliari becomes an outing, not an extra overnight stay.

The daily ranges are editorial allowances per person for two adults sharing a room, with food and local transport. They do not promise current prices. Flights, special admissions and booked beach packages are additional. Check seasonal opening for toilets, loungers or food at the particular beach: a place name alone does not confirm availability.
