Why São Miguel is the best first island
São Miguel gives the clearest first Azores mix: crater lakes, hot springs, coast roads, tea fields, viewpoints and enough services to stay flexible when weather shifts.
The island is not tiny, so base choice and weather order matter more than just drawing a loop on the map.
I would not rush away from São Miguel. Five well-paced days here can feel better than seven days split across too many islands.

Practical take
São Miguel can fill a whole week. Five calendar days and four nights leave three full outings: Sete Cidades/west coast, Furnas, and Lagoa do Fogo or the north coast. Seven days give Ponta Delgada and a weather alternative more room. Direct arrival depends on your departure airport and dates.
Three different outing days
West: In good visibility, start at an open viewpoint above Sete Cidades, then drive into the village and visit the lakeshore. Mosteiros is a possible coastal extension. Sete Cidades and Furnas are on different sides of the island; avoid combining them into a day spent largely in the car.
Furnas: Choose garden and bathing time deliberately. Terra Nostra combines a garden with thermal pools; Poça da Dona Beija is a separate facility with its own ticket. Check booking slots and rules for the chosen bath, especially with children. A second bath is optional. Allow a day for the village, a meal and your selected facility.
Fogo/north: Lagoa do Fogo depends on visibility. Before driving up, check current road access and shuttle arrangements through Lagoa do Fogo; old summer dates do not automatically apply to your trip. In cloud, Ribeira Grande and a coastal break are alternatives. A lakeshore hike is a separate plan; use only the open, marked approach.
Where to base
Ponta Delgada suits restaurants, arrival and varied outings. One base is enough for four nights. With six nights, four Ponta Delgada and two Furnas can deepen the eastern stay if your flight allows the final drive back; otherwise remain in town. For evening thermal bathing, check actual visitor hours rather than a hotel's package privileges.
Common mistakes
Book boats or baths without fixing every viewpoint day. Compare a car on outing days with organized transport; a car is useful, but unnecessary for every city day. Driving farther in fog will not buy visibility.
