Azores Island Hopping Itinerary: 5, 7, 10 and 14 Days

A realistic Azores route for São Miguel, Terceira, Pico, Faial, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo without too many island changes.

Illustrative island-hopping scene, not a promise of a particular port or ferry service.

Orientation

Why Azores island hopping needs restraint

The Azores are scattered enough that moving islands is not a small detail. Flights, ferries, car pickup and weather all shape the real route.

A strong first trip usually does São Miguel well, then adds one clear second chapter rather than trying to sample every island.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

I would rather do São Miguel plus one island group calmly than lose the trip to transfers and weather stress.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Adding too many islands

Each island change costs check-in time, transport risk and rental-car logistics.

Assuming ferries connect everything easily

Ferry options are seasonal and strongest between some central islands, not a universal shortcut.

Leaving no cloud backup

Crater lakes and viewpoints can disappear behind weather quickly.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Worth it when you choose one route spine and leave enough room for Atlantic weather, ferry timing and slower island days.

Skip if

Skip multi-island hopping if you have fewer than four nights or need every day to run on a fixed schedule.

With kids

Keep São Miguel as the main base, add only one extra island and avoid same-day ferry or flight pressure.

Practical take

For a first week, I would stay on São Miguel. Crater lakes, Furnas, coast and city time fill the trip without flights splitting your free days. A second island earns its place through a different main interest: Angra on Terceira, vineyards and the mountain on Pico, or waterfalls on Flores.

Suggested route logic

5 days / 4 nights: Stay in Ponta Delgada throughout. Day 1 arrival, day 2 Sete Cidades and the west coast, day 3 Furnas, day 4 Lagoa do Fogo with suitable visibility or a coastal outing, day 5 departure. This short version has no full additional weather day.

7 days / 6 nights: Remain on São Miguel. Add Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande or a booked boat outing, keeping one full day available as an alternative. Order Sete Cidades and Fogo around visibility where fixed bookings allow.

10 days / 9 nights: Five nights São Miguel and four Terceira work with a suitable homebound flight from Terceira. With return flights through São Miguel, use four nights there, three Terceira and two final São Miguel nights. An island transfer counts as a travel day, not a full cave-and-city day.

14 days / 13 nights: For a central-islands combination, use four São Miguel nights, four Pico, three Faial and two São Miguel before flying home. São Jorge replaces an island block rather than being added. For the western group, use five São Miguel, six Flores and two São Miguel. Corvo remains a possible day trip from Flores; an overnight visit needs a revised allocation.

Common mistakes

The night counts cover the whole trip; arrival, departure and transfers are already included in the calendar days. Two final nights reduce connection pressure but do not guarantee an undisrupted journey home. Check available flights and ferries before non-refundable accommodation.

Costs and choices

Each additional island brings another ticket, terminal transfer and often a new rental contract. Budget bands are editorial allowances per adult per day for two people sharing a room and car: accommodation, food, local transport and selected admissions. Travel to the archipelago and inter-island flights are excluded and need separate lines. These are not current quotes. On a tight budget, remove an island before cutting every stay to one night.

Save it for WanderSpend

Keep the night allocation beside flight numbers and pickup locations. Use the São Miguel guide for a first week and the Pico/Faial/São Jorge comparison for a separate central-islands trip.
