Rhodes: old town, Lindos and a Symi excursion

Six Rhodes nights with a clear base choice: old town or beach, a separate Lindos day and Symi only with a suitable return ferry.

Orientation

Choose the trip that fits

Rhodes Town suits several evenings in the medieval old town. Lindos combines a village with an acropolis above the coast. Faliraki shifts the stay toward a sandy beach and resort facilities.

Symi is the specific Dodecanese extension to assess from Rhodes. Whether it works as a day trip depends on an actual outward and return sailing, not distance alone.

Alex's Take

With six nights, I would keep one base: Rhodes Town for cultural evenings or a suitable coastal town for daily swimming. Give Lindos its own day and leave Symi as a choice for another.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Counting Lindos as a photo stop

The acropolis and village need time for the climb, entry and breaks; midday heat adds difficulty.

Treating Rhodes quays as interchangeable

Use the quay specified for your operator and sailing, not a generic Rhodes-port pin.

Putting Symi immediately before the flight

Keep the final full day on Rhodes so a delayed boat does not threaten a same-day flight.

Travel planning answers

Planning questions

Rhodes Town or Faliraki?+

Choose Rhodes Town for old-town and cultural evenings, Faliraki for sand and resort facilities. The exact hotel location determines walking distances and noise.

Do I need two bases?+

Usually not for five or six nights. Lindos can be a day trip; a second base makes sense if you want several evenings there.

Can Symi be a day trip?+

It can. Check the available sailing pair, Rhodes quay and Symi landing with the operator. Panormitis is not the same stop as the main town.

Is a beach hotel automatically near the old town?+

No. Check the actual bus or taxi journey. Elli is near Rhodes Town; Faliraki and Lindos are different base choices.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

For a trip combining a medieval town, ancient Lindos and beach days without changing islands every second night.

Skip if

Do not treat Rhodes as a quick addition to a western Cyclades itinerary; arrival and departure need a separate decision.

With kids

The Lindos acropolis involves an uphill approach, steps and sun. Plan an early visit with breaks, or stay in the village and at the beach.

Guide details

Make the old town or beach your daily focus

Rhodes Town suits lanes, the Street of the Knights and a selected visit such as the Palace of the Grand Master. Give the old town a full morning or afternoon, with a break and separately checked admission. For luggage and a car, establish the actual access to accommodation inside or outside the walls.

Elli provides a beach-side alternative near town, with pebbles and tourist facilities. Faliraki offers a longer sandy beach but is a different holiday town. Staying there does not put Rhodes’ medieval lanes within an evening walk.

Give Lindos its own day

Lindos combines the village and its bays with the acropolis above the coast. Decide on the climb before the hottest part of the day. Steps and exposure give families with small children a reason to visit early or concentrate on the village and beach instead.

Do not add Lindos to a full old-town day and a long island circuit. Check the return bus or parking access before climbing. Enter current admission from the official sale into your budget rather than relying on an old guidebook price.

Seven days and six nights

Our plan keeps six nights at one base: arrive on day one, explore the old town on day two, visit the beach on day three, Lindos on day four, and leave day five free or optional for Symi. Remain on Rhodes on day six and depart on day seven.

With five nights, drop the separate Symi day. Several nights in Lindos or on Symi require extending the journey or deliberately replacing part of the main Rhodes stay. Keep the final airport transfer in the plan.

Check Symi and the correct landing

Dodekanisos Seaways lists day-trip options from Rhodes. For your date, check both sailings and the actual time ashore on Symi. The main-town destination and a Panormitis stop are different products.

The operator also publishes Symi docking notices. Save these with the Rhodes quay and last return sailing. A sightseeing cruise with multiple stops and a scheduled ferry are not interchangeable; do not book from a generic harbor photograph.

Costs and island group

Add six room nights, seven days of meals, airport and island transport, and selected admission. Symi is a separate excursion cost. For a resort, check included meals before adding full restaurant days again.

Rhodes belongs to the Dodecanese. On a first visit it remains a separate flight and island choice; the itinerary guide does not force it into a short trip with Naxos and Milos. The ferry guide explains buffers and port changes.
