Orientation
Separate the tour from the approach
Stay in Füssen and treat Hohenschwangau as the starting point for the castle approach. Arriving the previous evening makes a booked morning visit easier.
Budget bands are rough editorial base costs per person per day for two adults sharing a room, including meals and a vehicle or local transport. Flights, mountain railways, boats, admission and special tolls are extra.

I would secure the castle entry first, then book the Füssen night. Without an interior tour, spend more time in the old town and beside the lake.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Resolve before booking
Your entry time applies at the castle, not the car park. The uphill walk needs its own allowance.

Planning questions
How much time does this plan need?+
Allow half a day from Hohenschwangau, including the uphill approach and waiting. Adding Füssen makes a full outing day.
When should I shorten the plan?+
If the interiors do not interest you, omit the guided tour rather than queuing speculatively for remaining tickets.
What matters with children?+
The castle administration excludes pushchairs and large child carriers from the interior. Confirm storage and arrangements for small children before booking.

Separate the tour from the approach
The interior is accessible only on a guided tour. Use the official ticket link; remaining on-site tickets are not guaranteed. The palace administration gives about 30–40 minutes for the roughly 1.5 km steep uphill walk from the ticket centre. Arrival, parking and finding your way happen before that.
Marienbrücke is an extra stop
Treat the bridge as a separate viewpoint. Check current access, especially in wintry conditions, and do not put it so close to your tour that a photograph risks missing entry. A shuttle does not remove every walk to the castle either.
Finish in Füssen
After the timed visit, choose Füssen’s old town or a short Alpsee walk. Before an early onward mountain journey, I would retain the Füssen overnight. Continuing after the castle can work with only one night, provided the day does not also include Zugspitze or another long attraction visit.
